How to Fix Wireless Router Problems Hi, I’m Bruce Naylor your FrugalTech and I came across some very good tips on how to solve some of the more common problems you may experience for the wireless router. I came across this article at Information Week it was written by Bill O’Brien and I thought this were pretty good and I want to share some of these with you. You know, it’s basically boils down to when a good wireless router seems to go bad. What could be the problem? What could be some of the possible fixes, so the first problem I think a lot of people do run into is that your router seems to be really, really slow I mean, we’re talking it slows more while it’s February. What could be the problem with it? Well, a lot of routers basically used the 2.5 gigahertz band to broadcast on. Well, so do a lot of other devices rust door, openers, cordless phones, microwave, ovens all these sort of thing and when that happens you can get a lot of traffic on those frequencies and Bill uses analogies a lot like getting in a crowded bus on a busy city and fighting for that space, so that could be part of the problem. Now, there are basically three major channels that you can use. One, six and 11 now we’re up to 11 channels on there but according to Bill, he says that despite pretending to have 11 channels the others tend overlap each other, so your neighbor may had have Wi-Fi enable also and so you could be getting some problems there. A potential solution to this might be to change the channel, try a different channel on your wireless router, and then you could alternatively add a five gigahertz band components such us the net gear WNHDEB11 networking kit or the link says, WGA600 and to you present router, and that’s a five gigahertz band adapter. That can give you up to 23 different channels to try, but you also need a pair of adapter as well. So, once attached to the network switch and then another to your network cord on your or router to the adapters on your network devices, so that is a possibility to solve that problem. You may also try upgrading your firmware that may sound scary to some folks but it’s really not that tough. A lot of times you go to the manufacture’s website you download the patch, open up your browser and go into your administrative tools of your router, upload the patch to it little update the firmware, so it’s not really that scary over procedure to do that. He also says, now it’s really just fairly easy to do it and I’ve done it many times so it’s no big deal. Another problem that you may encounter with the wireless router is that you’re trying to play let’s say a game with your kids are upstairs and things are really slow. Well, there could be quite of few reasons for that, among them too many game players on the network owned a 2.5 gigahertz connection may cause some problems. Another common problem I guess Bill says that you know, we are routers acting like a vampire and he is talking about that it sucks large continuously. Well, the solution is that you know, every electronic device sucks wattage and some things should. When you purchase energy efficient router consider the possibilities, have you setup Windows to check for updates when you’re not using your computer. Do you have other software that keeps for updates? Do you have other—how about like Windows Media Center for example, it will continue to go online and get updates. So, we really online 24/7 anymore, so 24.7 power usage is one of those consequences, so that being said, there are some energy star compliant routers out there if you want to go to that that trouble. Another problem is you reach a dead spot in your home; your office with an 802.11g router and you can’t seem to reliably connect to it. Well, this is where you want to consider the new 802.11n routers that you used a technology called MIMO, multiple-input multiple-output. This is more frequencies, more signals going to that router. Their being market is having a greater speed, greater bandwidth and a longer range than the 802.11n routers what we call 54-megabit routers, so that is certainly something worth bearing in mind when you’re having some reliability issues connecting to your wireless router in your home or in your shop. The next issue is no Wi-Fi signal you know, your office or your home so far away to your router that no Wi-Fi signal can connect. Well, the obvious step is you connect a Cap 5 cable, so a Cap 5, a Cap 6 you know to your device but that’s not always practical, so an alternative is there’s always that was called power-line networking and really what that is, is a device that plugs in to your wall socket and on both ends one near the router one near your wireless device and you connect that way. Now, there built is being able to get your speed of upwards to 300 megabits but in the real world it’s closer to about 54 megabits sometimes slower net sometimes there’s no flat work at all, so if you want to go that route and maybe you have to because you know, maybe your building lamp, your lamp won’t permit you doing things like that whatever reasons it might be make sure to check the return policy if you go down that avenue. And finally, the last problem no winner to that connection and typically you cannot get this kind of things happen when you rearranged your network, you move your modem your cable modem you move you router getting set back up and you can’t connect one of those things I can’t connect to the internet. This is typically cost by a something that being set back up correctly you know, not all the cables were correctly installed or I know this is crazy but I’ve seen a lot of cable modems and DSL modem as well having on and off button for the internet or you can just tap a button it kills your internet connection. And people will accidentally tap that button and they think it’s something else that they have done. No, it is just as simple as hitting a little button that turns your internet connection back on. That’s just one of the reasons but typically it cost it didn’t get reinstalled correctly. It didn’t put the right cable or right connection into something like that.
