Here’s the problem, broken whammy. Very common problem it’s a very cheap part. I’m going to show you how to fix it or we are just going to use a few simple tools and very few extra little parts.
So first things first, let us start by this is disassembling of this gloss over the basic stuff. That comes off, controller out. Now, we’re doing the Wii version of the guitar here with three controller. But one understands this as the same for PlayStation version and Xbox version.
All the whammies are the same. So controller out, this play off. We are going to start with the screws. Now, there are four screws up here where the neck attaches. This is juts a small Philips head screw there’s going to be four of those. Magnetic tips screwdriver will really help. Now for the rest of the screws we’re going to use a small torque spit and I happen to have a small bit kit here, but you can find this pretty much anywhere. So all disclaimer, you’re going to have to avoid your warranty. So if you’re still within the warranty just take it back. This is the warranty sticker I’ve already removed.
Once all of the screws have been removed from the back and then also the four screws from the front, then we’re going to pull the case apart. I always do this with the front side facing down. Don’t be surprised if little pieces starts popping off, they come right back on. That off. And now we got our basic setup here.
Now, here is the problem with the whammies, just slides straight up and out. This piece pops off, this piece now pops off. As you can see that’s our offending part. They are all made the same way very cheaply, that’s where it’s going to break.
As for this other parts that pop loose, you won’t need these anymore they’ll be two of these but do go ahead and save the spring that connects those. What you’re going to want to do next is remove the bar from the base here. It’s held in place with the small c-clip. You can use any small pointy piece. You can use the tip of the knife or some such thing. Just get in there and pop that c-clip out. You want to save that, and then simply just pull them apart.
Now, the next step you’re going to want to do is go and take an Exacto knife and you just want to chisel a small groove out of this peg. Be careful not to cut yourself. Just work a little groove in here. This is where the spring is going to reside when we’re all done and that groove will help hold that spring in place. When you’re done it should look something like these.
Next thing we’re going to do is we’re going to take the original base, we’re going to drill a small hole to mount the spring that we took off earlier onto. You’re going to want to take a very small drill of it and put a small pilot hole in the base. I’m going to say somewhere in here. Now, since I’m a cheapy, I’m going to just steal one of screws that came with the case and reuse that for our spring holder. So put the screw through the spring and let’s secure that. You don’t want to orient the spring to the top.
So the next thing you’re going to want to do is you are going to want to put that spring onto the knob where you carve the notch off earlier. This is not easy I’ve already stressed my spring out. Once the spring is on, then slip the base or rocker back on to this part here. Once it’s all attached once you got good spring tension there, you want to put the bar back in the rocker. Slide that through the base to the bottom—this is where it gets tricky. You’re going to have to put that small C-clamp back on to the bar.
So I like to use a small pair of pliers, but if you have very nimble fingers you might be able to side it on without. With the C-clip in place, the other side panel back on, feed the bar back down through and just slide these pieces back in.
Alright, now just start the reassembling process. Don’t forget to put your strapped pieces back on. And as you can see, fully functional whammy.
