Now I know that this mirror looks like it costs about two grand, but it didn't. It costs $100 and took as half a day. If you want to see how to do it yourself stick around it, because it's about to unfold.
Now in this space, if you're lacking depth and also a lot, and the mirror we are about to create is going to give you both of those. Now you really don't need much time, space or money to build the mirror. We're going to reuse an old sliding door mirror, a piece of three quarter inch birch plywood and some molding.
I'm going to start with measuring up the mirror to get the dimensions, so I could transfer them on to the birch plywood. So that when we cut it out, it's perfectly framed.
Okay, now once we have popped this out, this is actually the recess where the mirrors going to sit. Now if you have a look at this, we are actually using for the interior of the frame, a little piece of chair rail. Chair rail has this re-back cutting. What we're going to do is sit this around the inside of the actual frame and then the mirror will sit up against the re-back.
Next, I'm going to make a bold statement by trimming the exterior of my frame with large molding. Alright, now that trim is in place, we are ready for paint and then the mirror.
Now the key to this project is creating a contrast. Because the back wall is actually painted brown, we've chosen a white color. So now that mirror is in place, we put our backing board on. Once I screw these in, get ready, because something stunning is going to be hanging on the wall.
Now here is a little tip for you. If you are going to do something like this, you don't want to chain to actually pull off the hook. So we put some watches on there. So once the chain goes down behind there, it's not going to move. It is ready to hang at set level.
Now this once plain and blank wood has got a great feature wall. We have added symmetry in depth, not to mention the fact that this cost less than a $100 and it only took me about four and a half hours. It's half a day's work.
