How to Get A Summer Job

Rebecca Brayton: Looking for a summer job? So is everybody else. Hi. I am Rebecca Brayton and welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be speaking with a job councilor who will give us some tips on landing that great summer job. So what should students think about when they are looking for a job? Jaclyn Schwartzman: Well I think first of all, it is important for students to clarify what their goals are by obtaining this job. So what are their short-term goals? Why do they want this specific job right now and what are their long term goals. What are they looking for in terms of their career? Rebecca Brayton: Where can students find information about the labor market? Jaclyn Schwartzman: I’d say your best bet is to probably start by doing your research and by that I mean starting to network whether it be amongst employment councilors, whether it be amongst friends, family members, website certainly but again, I suppose to proceed with caution when it comes to certain websites, we certainly hear it just will thrive a number of different strategies, rather than going online since only 20% of jobs are advertised, we really target another 80%. Rebecca Brayton: What needs to be on a student’s resume especially if this is their first job? Jaclyn Schwartzman: First and foremost their contact information which makes them of sense I suppose but also I think important to clarify what exactly they are looking for in terms of work, volunteer experience, their educational background and as well what they like to do, their interest and hobbies to really give that well rounded profile. Rebecca Brayton: What can a student do to make themselves stand out from other applicants? Jaclyn Schwartzman: Well I think it is important for a student to know what his or her assets are. What he or she brings to the table and certainly to kind of market himself or herself in that way and to follow up certainly with any potential employers. Rebecca Brayton: Can you give perspective employees some tips on how to find the perfect summer job? Jaclyn Schwartzman: Network amongst family and friends, teachers especially and it is really figuring out, you know what you want to do with your summer. Rebecca Brayton: Do you have any warning as for students looking for a job? Jaclyn Schwartzman: I’d say the only warning would be is you know, you should really be sure of what you want and maybe yeah, if something does not feel right at the outside to maybe ask why it does not feel right. Rebecca Brayton: Should students take the first job they get or should they wait for the right job to come around? Jaclyn Schwartzman: Well, I think it depends on what is the right job and I think if a student really has his or her heart set on a job to maybe you know, see that through before accepting the first offer on the table. Rebecca Brayton: So what is the time frame for a follow-up for students? Jaclyn Schwartzman: At least within three to four days. I think you know, probably within the first 48 hours.
