If you took any basic Electronic classes you would understand that Voltage is only potential much like pressure, while current is much like the flow of the water and to complete the water analogy it's power, Voltage times current, that is like gallons per minute. It's true that you can measure 50 V in a phone outlet, go ahead and try it, it's easy to do. They use this voltage because higher voltages need to flow less to send the same power and therefore there is less loss of power much like there would be less friction in a pipe if you had a larger pipe flowing slower. The energy is free in the sense that you don't have to pay for it, i find it amusing people assume he meant it was coming from nothing. Yes the phone company pays for that energy to be sent across it, but you use it all the time even if you don't know it and it's not illegal. Why do you think you're wired phones not have to be plugged into another power source, or again do you just think it

Seriously 50 Volts ? ... High voltage only come in when the phone rings. Other wise it will remain 3-5 V. The phone company cant do that as it wastes power.

Voltage does not "run through" wires. That's like saying pressure "runs through" a pipe.

It's fun too se so many stupid comments. It only adds to how people from Europe look upon Americans. The trick works, of course. If you only had paid more interest in school this would have been evident for you.
