Informative, but not recommended. I don't think the phone company would approve of you using their line to power things other than phones. Plus there's the risk of blowing your line fuse at the exchange if you draw too much current. That would probably make the telco a bit suspicious.

no it isnt, you people are all retarded (except the ones that also realize this doesn't work very well, and is of little actual practical use.) Also, its hardly FREE if you are PAYING for your phone bill

There is little current available from phone lines (I know telephone engineers who used to test phone lines by shorting them on their fingers). If you try this technique your will find the voltage will drop/stop for all devices which aren't ridiculously low power. (this is why the telephone ringing stops the lamp in the video). Also if for some bizarre reason the voltage didn't drop the phone line could get hot. Very simply look at the thickness of mains wire then compare to phone lines. This could well start fires anywhere the lines go. Try putting out a fire that starts inbetween rooms and under floors! In short don't do this it's pointless and in fault conditions dangerous.

I first learned about this in my days of reading things like the Anarchist's Cookbook (those days are long since over)... although I think this came from something called 'the blue book' or something like that... either way, glad to see it in action.

The electricity company keep big banks of batteries to maintain this 50V supply so that the phones keep working in an emergency. So what you are doing here is leeching off a community emergency resource for your own personal benefit. By doing this, you flatten the Telco's batteries, and the phone service goes out at the time it is most needed.
