Alan Greene: Up until about 1988 obesity raised in kids and its quiet diseased raised in that to say. And that is just since then that is rapidly sky rocked it. which is good news that news is something we can change its not inevitable hasn’t always been this way and there is simple ways to get back through the way that we designed to teach kids how to eat and that’s what this book Feeding Baby Green is about it’s a simple plan it covers the 34 month window were kids imprint and goes over each of the ways that we would learn scientifically the kids do imprint. It is well actually before I say the pediatrics we divide we follow kids development to every world child visit and we divided up in certain different standards grows marrow development, the big muscles that how they use in their spine marrow development their finger coordination the social language development and there is a social and language development different kinds we look at.
And we look at intelligence in kids and adults we use to take just you know mass intelligence but now we know there is other kinds it is artistic intelligence and emotional intelligence and social intelligence and one I am proposing is it is there is another kind of intelligence its really important for our life long health enjoy and that’s nutritional intelligence. Nutrition intelligence is something it’s the ability to recognize and to enjoy healthy amounts of the foods would design for. Healthy amounts of good food that’s nutritional intelligence and right now in United States today we have a bunch of kids we have raised the generation that are basically developmentally delayed when it comes to nutritional intelligence. They don’t learn how to love the vegetables and fruits and grains so their bodies are build to grave. Often until they are adults and even when they do finally learn it when they hit a little to the French Rice the chocolate chip cookie or whatever it is we go padding after that is quick so we can at least watch to and have to resist it hard.
Because we’ve been imprinted the last generation we’ve been imprinted with the wrong stuff. So what I want to do and I what I might deep desire is to give to parents the tools the eight essential steps of how to caught a nutritional, intelligence in kids and how to teach them to imprint on the right stuff so it is not food battle so its fun so they really have joy and pleasure deep in that before they have been they feel like it doing what ever meant to do when they eat food its best for them. And that’s the way it’s been for most of human histories. Since last 50 years so we got enough track so the 8 circles really quickly the 8 essential steps.
Number 1 is to take charge and by take charge I don’t mean that you try to have food battles with your kid or force them to eat something or say that if you eat more vegetables you get dessert or anything like that all that I mean is creating an environment with the right food surround for them to imprint on. In the right way since it’s just creating a space at each window for that to happen. And part of that means bringing kids into the circle of the family meal right from the start to get them this whole idea of kids meals and baby food that separate come out the family to eat is really a reason in the ratio my dad was born there was no such thing basically as baby food. Today that time I was born almost every kid in the America enjoys the baby food instead they different stuff they separated out from what the adult say.
The second one of the essential steps is to use the critical windows of opportunity. And that when they talk about from 6 to 13 months is 1 but there is another critical window during pregnancy. And there is another one on the first day of life and there is another one after kids who have couple months older and the breast feeding are taking formula and there is nothing else to get no salad foods are still imprinting on food during that is when they get their food spices and another one when they first start reaching for finger foods there is another one when they start using a spoon themselves there is another one they start using a fork themselves that’s a series of them and each one primes them for the next one want to make so easier and easier and easier to choose and enjoying with stuff.
The third one of the essential steps is to input all the senses with the case its just movement it’s in with humans is a lot more complex its the thing that they smell especially earlier life it’s a things that they see for sure especially when color vision first comes inner on 4 months old it’s the language that’s use to describe foods its taste for sure by the time their toddlers it takes about 89 times to try a new food before they are going to like it they will say still can learn but it’s a lot harder at that point.
Number 4 is to choose the right amounts, we want to imprint people not just on certain flavors but on so you feel satisfied when you eat the amount of food is best for your body and you can do that and it is easy to do.
The essential step number 5 is to choose the right variety because if you choose the right varieties kids don’t just learn the foods that you have been imprinted them with but they become adventures eaters that want to try new foods on a recognized the once it is good for them. Recognize textures are good for them too it’s a variety of textures as well so its important to teach in the US kids like you know white flours kind of stuff that they like ketch up they don’t like tomatoes because they never learn that texture at the right window.
Number 6 is to customize for your family learning the customize this idea of imprinting is critical for success but some times you are eating out some times you are eating at home sometimes you are going to choose baby foods are made for them some will choose to make their own and there is ways to customize is really simple principles to work for any setting whether you are Custer, vegetarian or what ever you could do this.
Number 7 is to use age appropriate activity I am talking about exercise, physical activity and sleep. Because as it turns up how we eat how we enjoy food is really tightly in twined with those two things. The more healthy activity you have the better you sleep, the better you sleep it changes your hormones and the more you like healthy food and you can help all of those by helping any one of them but link them together.
And the last one that the 8th essential steps is to reap the benefits of green. When it comes to food in there is several ways things have been by that way environmentally its true that whole family eats is more important or impact in the environment and on our use of possible fuels and our contribution of global warming and what kind of car we drive. But I am not talking mostly about that I am talking about the benefits to the child. When they get a food that’s ripe and fresh or frozen, freshly when it was ripe and pack with nutrients are so good for them organic foods is so good and when they don’t get the pesticides, the chemical colors, the chemical preservatives and the thing I am most concerned about or the hormones were exposing our kids too. The hormones are exposing into both in the foods themselves and in the containers that we store the food in that heat food and serve the food in. But again its just the last fifty years last generation or two we can turn this around from this point forward no baby in the US should ever need to be raised printed on the wrong stuff what a chance that is when there is so much wonderful food around us. So I hope that you guys will all help join in creating a delicious revolution a born appetite.
