Male: So whether you are self taught or your father showed you how, chances are you are not shaving properly. Today I am at the Shave in Beverly Hills to find out how to give myself the perfect shave. I met up with Adam Dishell, proprietor of the Shave of Beverly Hills to teach me how to get the perfect shave.
Adam Dishell: To there is five basics steps. You want to clean your face and heat it up then you want to do the pre-shave.
Male: Okay.
Adam Dishell: Then the actual shaving. Then you need to cool down and then you moisturize. There you go and then you splash some warm water in your face. That is the heating of the face and what this is doing is it is softening the skin, making the skin more elastic, opening the pores so that the pores are not clinging to the hair very tightly.
Male: Okay.
Adam Dishell: What this is going to do is it is going to help you stand up the beard because you will start to feel the hairs standing up. We are going to take a Glycerin based shaving cream and we are going to take a shaving brush and we are going to lather that up. Now everybody thinks the shaving brush is just there because it looks good but what it is, it is badger hair. The reason they use badger hair in a shaving brush is because it retains water very well and what this is going to do is going to provide a much better glide for the blade. You are going to want to wet the blade. You are going to come down with the grain just like that. Do not take too long to stroke.
Male: Yes.
Adam Dishell: Down here I am going to show you that your growth pattern goes this way.
Male: Oh! That comes up a lot smoother.
Adam Dishell: Now we are entering into step four which is the cool down period. So the first step in the cool down is to get a good witch hazel base not alcohol based after a shave and what this is doing is, this is cleaning the skin making sure there is no bacteria and now we come to the final step, the step that almost every guy seems to skip and probably the most important in protecting your skin from the elements and that is to moisturize. Then your skin has a nice shine to it now.
Male: That is pretty amazing actually.
Adam Dishell: Yes. That feels, you know like a baby’s bottom.
Male: Wow! It does really feel pretty awesome. I like that. Now I know how to do it properly. Thank you so much Adam.
Adam Dishell: That is great. Now you know how to give yourself the perfect shave.
