This is Dr. Anthony Kane with the Complete Connection Parenting program with another parent tip for you. Today we will discuss what you do when your child won't get out of bed.
You have got a kid who likes to sleep late, it's hard to get up in the morning and in the end, he's got to go to school, 6 o'clock, 7'clock, whatever time it is; you go to his room, wake him up, got to go back 5 minutes, wake up again and again and again and again for 10 times, 20 times, whatever it takes to get him out of bed. You got to drag him out of that.
Now he might be curse at you, maybe if he doesn't curse at you but you just can't get him out of bed. So what do you do? Well first of all let's look at the problem. Now a child has got to go to school. He has got to get up on time. Whose problem is that? Is it your problem or your child's problem? Well, if you are the one getting him up and you are taking responsibility that he must get up on time, you are making -- your job to get him up on time, it's your problem he's not getting up for school.
But really, it's his problem. He has got the obligation to go to school. He's got to face the consequences when he's late, he's got to get to detention if he doesn't come on time and he misses class and has to catch up. It's really his problem and you don't want to take over responsibility for problems not yours. You want to teach your child to become responsible and the way you do that is by giving your child the responsibility that's really his. So it's his job to get up for school.
What can you do is this -- you go to his room, wake him up once. He doesn't get up, he sleeps at bed, he sleeps late, 11 o'clock he gets up, he's late for school, he's got to go and he faces the consequences as of being late. Now he would be upset with you, unhappy with you but he's going to eventually learn that it's up to him to get up on time. That's really the way it is because when he is an adult, he is not going to have you getting up for his job, he's not going to have his wife getting him up for his job, he's got to take care, be responsible himself and how to raise his own children, get his children up and be responsible as an adult. You cannot take over responsible for your child. He has got certain obligations that he must do that himself and your job is to train him to do such a thing.
So the wiser you handle a child getting up, not getting up on time. Again, we will talk at different time, why to do when the child really wants to sleep late and miss school and doesn't care, we will discuss that at different time.
