Have you ever found yourself at the ball field? And before the game is even going, you’re admiring just the lawn of it. I mean golf fields always got this wonderful looking lawns, they’ve got this nice straight lines and perpendicular lines and you’re sitting there thinking, “Man I love it if my lawn looks like that”. Well, I’m going to show you a few techniques, a few tricks to help you to get your own gold field like turf at home.
First thing I’m going to start with is talking about the grass itself. Now, when you go to a stadium whether it’s baseball or football, typically you’re going to see grasses that are either fescues, blue grasses, rye grasses. All three are great for golf field lawn because they’re durable and dense turf, kind of like what we have here. So we got the right type of grass here, then you got to make sure that you have the right mower.
What I’ve got is a nice and heavy commercial great walk behind mower. So those lines you see out on the ball field or well-maintained yard comes from the wheels making tracks out there in the turf.
I want to make sure that my lawn mower is set at the right height because you don’t want to cut too low but you need to get it down low enough to where you make a difference on how you’re lawn looked. About three inches is good for this but you want to check the height once you start the mowing or you actually start cutting.
First, mow around the entire perimeter then mow it again, just inside to create a wide enough area to turn the mower around for the next step creating straight lines. What you want to do is you want to find you’re self a reference point. What I’m going to use is that tree down there. Once you create that straight line, you’re next line just follows it and you just keep on going on straight lines, that’s really the key.
Do you see how I had just enough room? Because I made these two perimeters cut, they gave me the room I needed just to turn around. Again, if you’ve got shrubs or something up against you, you might want to go around three times. Give yourself a room to make that turn and then check out your line.
When you’re mowing, you’re always overlapping the path that you’ve just made. The blade is a little inset, the wheels are one the outside and you got to compensate from that. So on my wheels are always going to be riding a couple inches inside the path that I’ve just cut. Let me show you what I’m talking about.
I’ve got half of my area done, nice lines opposite of each other. I went down and I came back up, I went down and I came back up. If you keep that same pattern, you’re already starting your striking effect.
It looks that way because cutting grass lays in the same direction the mower was moving. So, alternate directions in each pass for those visible lines. Whenever you got to dump into you bag, leave the mower where it’s supposed to be lined up and take the bag instead of wheeling the mower all the way over to dump it.
Now once you’re done with all your work, then you get this wonderful payoff, this nice clean intentional straight lines. Hey, it’s a little more work but look at the payoff we get, a lawn that’s truly a home run every time.
