Pleasant looking leather but hate the price, with just paint, glaze, and newspaper, I am going to show you how to recreate the luxurious looks without the big price tag.
I am going to give this plain wooden TV cabinet a rugged look with the faux leather technique. It's so easy anyone can do it.
If the piece you are about to paint have a high-gloss finish, you want to lightly sand it before you begin. Lucky for me, this one doesn't need it. I am applying an oil-based primer to be sure that my base coat is going bit thick.
Primer usually takes around an hour to dry but be sure to read the can. The undercoat is important in a project like this because they create the warm leather look. So pick a color within the shades of warm orange to caramel. I am only painting the top of this piece with the leather technique, but feel free to do an entire piece of furniture or even your walls with it. For the rest of my piece, I chose the dark-brown because it's going to make the leather pop.
Before you start glazing, let the paint dry between four and six hours. Now the piece is dry and ready for glaze. This is the part that creates the contrast and gives us that leather look. When I am creating a glaze I usually use three parts glaze to one part paint, but remember, all glazes are different, so be sure to read the directions on the back of the can.
You are going to start by getting a lot of glaze on your brush and you are going to spread it all over the surface. Remember, if it's a large piece, you can work in small sections. Glaze goes on differently than paint, so don't worry if it's uneven.
Next, you are going to get a piece of newspaper and you are going to place it gently on the top. Using the palm of our hand, gently press over the entire surface. Remember, don't use your finger tips because we don't want to leave fingerprints in our surface.
Pick up the paper to repeat the palm technique, but remember to rotate it so you don't get the same pattern.
If your paper gets too saturated with glaze, throw it away and get a new piece. Now that you've got the glazing done, let it dry for about an hour and then don't forget to protect it with a coat of polyurethane.
And one day, you can bring the faux look of leather to any piece of furniture. So when you are just about to throw out the Sunday paper, think twice and think faux.
