Neck and face. Using the hands simultaneously, apply bilateral effleurage beginning at external notch. Continue effleurage from external notch over the shoulders and along the trapezius. Continue the movement up to the base of the hair line, while gently creeling the head in one hand, continue effleurage strokes down the side of the neck. Paying attention to any areas that may be tight. Repeat effleurage strokes on neck and shoulders. Repeat this move on other side. Repeat this move several times thoroughly kneading the side of the neck. Continue the movement down in neck across the shoulder and around the deltoid. Apply light pressure to the neck and shoulders using a V-stroke continue effleurage down the neck around the shoulders and up to the hair line. Apply slight traction to the cervical spine by hooking the fingers onto the base of the hair line and gently pulling. Using light pressure, massage in and around the ears. Massage the scalp by making circular motions with the fingertips. Using the thumb, apply effleurage to the forehead from the middle of the forehead to the hair line. Apply light pressure or fiction around the mouth and jaw line moving up to the temples where light pressure is applied.
The movements used during this massage will be effleurage which includes stroking. Stroking is done toward the heart. The pressure should be slow and rhythmic. Firm strokes upward and light strokes on the way down. I will also be using light circular friction movement and petrissage, which is, squeezing movement usually circular and is applied with the thumbs or fingers. Petrissage is mainly done over soft tissue that has bone immediately beneath it. This movement must be performed without sliding the hands. Using the fingers in a criss-cross motion, pull up the forehead from the eyebrows toward the hair line. Work your way to the ears, then back to the forehead and repeat criss-cross motion with fingers. Massage in and around the ears.
Massage of the head, neck and face often helps to relieve stress and tension. Move up to the scalp and massage by using rotating movements with the fingertips. Move to the external notch and apply effleurage from the external notch over the shoulders and along the neck. Repeat this motion several times. Apply V stroke to the neck and the shoulders. The arm, before beginning massage movements, undrape the body part and apply oil. Stroke the arm from the hand to the shoulder. Stroke the whole arm again from the hand to the shoulder and back.
The thumb and first finger grab the skin between the client's thumb and the first finger and pull gently. Glide up the arm to the shoulder and knead around the shoulder and neck. Knead the carpals and metacarpals, then using circular motion, knead the fingers of the hand. Holding the forearm firmly, knee and rotate each finger while gently pulling. While holding the client's hand, massage the palm and the back of the hand. Once again, knead the carpals and metacarpals. Interlock your finger with the client's and apply joint movements and rotation. Rotating and stretching the joints can help ease the pain caused by arthritis. Apply petrissage to forearm. Continue petrissage up and down the forearm. Apply petrissage from the forearm to the shoulder. Apply petrissage or kneading all the way up the arm. Gently squeeze the neck and shoulder area. Knead all the way up from the wrist to the shoulder. Using a hand over hand motion, knead the upper arm and the lower arm. Glide up the arm to the shoulder and then back down again. Move to the other side and repeat.
