This is Charlie and he is a brown miniature poodle. As you can see he is in full show coat although we decided that he may look a little nicer if we put him into full lion trim. By that I mean putting a pack on and the full palms at the back.
So having brushed the coat out, take your hand, pull the coat down and I would say from the bottom of the foot from the strap pad take a good handful. Hold it and clip it up to the elbow. Just take off hold the rubbish. They say if you don’t take it too low down at this stage leave as much as possible. It’s just a bit you can see having bought your position so if the rubbish all the way go up right up to the elbow so you can actually feel the elbow there.
Now we just straighten it up all the way around the foot because it needs to be absolutely perfect line. I’m using a number 15 to do this as this is a dog I don’t know. I just want to be careful. You can use a closer blade, but I would advise on the first time you cut it out to use a 10 or a 15 because it’s a little gentler on them. Make sure that very often all the way around the foot, okay? Having done that one, as I said we can adjust it as we go on, so don’t worry about it if it’s not quite in the right position. Here again, trim it down and again take a good handful and take the rest off up to the elbow, straighten up. The line around must be straight, okay? Don’t worry if they are not exactly leveled at this stage. When you finish your trim you can adjust them. Having done that and got them in basically the right position.
We turn him around. And let stay with his rear around. We’re going to put his bottom palm in just above his hook there. So we’re going to have to cut this subtle in somewhere here. Here is his stifle bone here. We can feel this type of bone, and there’s his knee. And we’re going to come above the knee here and I'm going to make sure it’s comb out, and I’m going to come straight across to the knee. I cut the end. Be very, very sure that that is way you wanted before you cut, right? And that is done by looking at your dog and assessing his shape and balance having cut the end, make sure you go around it all the way.
There’s the point of his hook and when you cut out the middle palm you need to slow a bit lightly. It doesn’t go straight across. You need to slope it just lightly so find the point of his hook which is there, and I normally find there is quite a natural place where it fits in. Pop the hair there. I think that’s where is going to be and it needs definitely to be above the hook. Don’t put it on the point of the hook or below the point of the hook. It must be above it and I would say that is about where it needs to be. So we’re just going to put a little neck in here. As I said to you I like to do it with the scissors, some people do it with clippers, but I like to do mine at this stage with my scissors.
Having done that then I’m going to take my clippers, and I'm going to just do this in tiny, tiny little place, that’s all. Tiny, tiny little then all the way around the leg and turn around. I’m just going to do his tail and then we’ll go on and do his front legs. So make sure we’ve got all the bit of hair out to his jaw here. Let’s pick it up. But we don’t. It’s done. We put it off, out just up front which is so much better from form of the tail that we have on our legs, never mind. It will grow.
I’ve just let that twirl come down a little there. I would like you to grow a little lower down, but that’s just a personal preference. I mean owners of this dog obviously like his hair clipped up higher, but I just let her grow down a bit because I just see it looked nicer. I’m now going to cut in this from palms. You just gently nip out the hair up on the bottom of his legs, you can scissors, having done his saddle and his palms and his tail.
We’re now going to turn our attention to his main, so I’m going to take out his top knot. and remember when you take him balance that you would be taking out less of this, lift it up take it away from the hair before you cut it. Don’t go snipping in half his ear off. Take his ears out of the way. Be sure he’s standing right in front just go all these hair here and here and just at this moment you just making it up freely long, so here we go and get for the scissors and I’m going to cut away that there. Coming out, don’t cut it back. Don’t come this way with it, cut it straight. Take your scissors up in here. Now I want it half. Don’t be afraid to cut some of the top knot away.
I’ve clean off the table now and I’m just going to check him through and make sure that he is okay. Remember, he is a puppy. This clip is going to take time to settle on his coat, and his coat is going to need to mature. He lacks hair in places, so it’s not absolutely perfect but he is getting there and for a junior dog he is not at all bad. We’ve try to shorten him up. Keep his top line nice and level. We try to shorten up his back, and give him a pretty profile and of course we frame his lovely little head and that’s the lion trim.
