James Wilson: Hi! This is James Wilson with Elite Training Solutions. Today, what I want to talk about are some practical ways for you to move beyond just working out an actually start train and this idea is one of the core concepts that we work off of your one of the core concepts that I use in designing trained programs for people is just definitely -- our point is working out and training.
Now there are people out there, you said, yeah, you know working out, just going in, not really knowing what you're doing on, haven't planned and you know training is where you actually have something that you're working for and you've got a plan for and that's definitely moving more towards, training that what most people do, which is you know just kind of going to the gym and mindlessly wanted from one stage to the next and doing some random exercise and random sets and reps like that's definitely better than that, but I think that's still a little superficial, I just don't think that truly training goes a little bit deeper than that.
One of the things that I always fall back on when I'm talking on this concept is the definition of the word training, if you look up any definition of the word training, you're going to see the centers around the acquisition of the skill either learning or finding the skill. And so, just based on that definition, if you're not working on or finding skills and you're not actually training and so, but this is a really tough concept for a lot of people to understand like, how do it do it because it just go so far beyond what the modern fitness culture revolves around, which is kind of superficial workout, just going through a list of exercise, you know and an attempt build some fitness, burn some fat, build some muscle tone and things like that. When I think that training can do a lot more for you, so one of the most practical suggestions that I get from the people, how do I turn a workout into an actually training session is this. You need to understand that every rep of every exercise that you do is a chance for you to be learning about and refining a movement pattern.
Movement governs everything that you do, without movement we would be stuck literally. So, you know movement is very important for humans and so when we workout, actually, what we're doing is going through movement patterns, you know and so instead of just going through the movement patterns, it's kind of mindlessly, you know, I got to do, you know lunges followed by chin-ups, followed by bend rows and just looking that along lines, like understanding that you know the lunges are a chance for you to practice, unilateral quite a dominant movements. The chin up is a chance for you to practice a vertical pulling, bend row is a chance for you to practice horizontal pulling and understanding that these move the patterns or what you're actually doing not an exercise. The exercises are just variations of that movement pattern at the route of all exercises is a movement pattern that you are using and so to really turn a workout into training, which you need to be doing is using those exercises as a conscious chance for you to learn more about and refine those movement patterns.
And so, you know what, you have to really become aware of how am I creating this movement, you know for example with a lunge, when you, you know talking about like a forward lunge, which is one and one more common lunge variations. When you step forward, you should be you know landing on your heel and accepting the force with you heel, so that you can use your hip, you want to make sure that you're not collapsing over your leg, there all the way to shifting to your toe; you have to keep your heel planted on the ground that's just one of the basic principles of movement with lower body movement that usually if you're letting that heel come off the ground, you're letting too much weight shift to the toes, which is going to too much sharing force on the knee. So, you know without being clinches of that and practicing that skill while you're doing a lunges, you're not only setting yourself off for an injury down the road, you're not really training, you're not really learning about in refining a skill.
So, again, all -- training all the way centers on the acquisition of refinement of the skill. And so, each rep where you should be doing is analyzing at the end of each rep, you know take a half a second. How to do that feel? Is there anything that I notice that I did wrong? What can I do better in next rep? When you get to the point where every rep that you're trying to practice the movement pattern, you're quickly analyzing about how did I do at the end of each rep, what can I do better in the next rep that is what really starts to turn a workout into a real training session because at that point, when you walkout the door after your workout, you feel like you've learned something. You are more conscious of how you moved, you're more conscious of what your weaknesses are; you know when next time you come in. what you need to work on in order of finding that movement pattern.
So, again, why are you doing the exercises, why we're going to the program, you know building the fitness, you go in the streets, you're burning the fat, you're accomplishing your goals as far as that goes, but you're actually training, you're taking it to a deeper level and you walk out not only with some fitness built, but also with some skills built with movement pattern skills being built and that is the most important thing because without that conscious effort of continuing to try and perfect it to the final movement skills, you will eventually get hurt things more eventually start to go out on it because bad movement is going to create injuries and so this is how you turn the exercise into actual like part of your, you know you build your own physical culture, you know you start to really learn what exercise could do for you, it keeps you exercising in a long run because exercise becomes more than just an opportunity for you to you know burn some calories and build some muscles on and you know what you do, if you know, you've got a goal of I want to lose 20 pounds. Great, when you lose that 20 pounds, what's next, what is your motivation to continue to workout.
When you see this all the time with people that, they workout that, they make some gains, they kind of achieve some goals, and then not really have a motivation to continue to workout because they only look at exercise in that superficial level like what it does for them, just kind of physically, not what are they doing immensely what are they doing, you know as far secure -- so, when you get into in on that level and you start to realize like well, I've always got something that I can work on and I always got something with all my movement patterns that I can be thinking about and trying to refine. It helps you look at the exercises more of, why do I need to workout for the rest of my life, you know because unless you do, then you're going to start losing those skills, you're going to start moving badly, pain is going to start returning, fitness levels that you're going to start dropping.
So that is -- as since what training is really about and so like said, looking at each exercise, understanding what lessons that you can learn from that exercise, and then basically going through that little talking about where, you know each rep that you think about what am I trying to practice at the end of each rep, quickly analyzing what did I do good, what did I do bad, and then next rep what can I do better, I mean I tell to new clients, at the end of each rep, I should be able to ask you really important, how was that last rep? Was that good or right or was it trappy? You know and you need to have an answer for me. I don't know, it's a not a good answer. You know if you don't know how you created that movement, then you just wasted a rep, you just wasted a chance for you to learn these things. So, end of your trip, good, alright, trappy, if it was good, then do it again. If it was alright, what can do better do it, in the next rep you'll find it. If it was trappy, then you know you definitely will ask the things that you need to work on.
So, your last rep should not look exactly like your first rep, I want your first rep was perfect. And very few was able to achieve that perfection, it's a journey not a destination, so we're always trying to refine things, but anyway, so that's just kind of a different way of looking and working at it, a different concept a different way for you to take your workouts beyond just a superficial level and really start to make it a gigantic impact on every aspect of your life. You want to have to mover better is going to just, it's going to hoping up so many things for you that you didn't even know or opened up to you.
This is what's going to help to reduce pain, this is what's going to really help to increase performance for those we're looking for that and it's fun, it goes beyond just kind of going in and mindlessly pumping out some reps on some random exercises, you know like, again that's alright, but if you're not consciously trying to refine the movement or skills with every rep and every exercise, then you're not really training and that's what you have to do, you all have to do that to really at the most of your workouts. So anyways, once again, this is been James Wilson with Elite Training Solutions. I hope you've enjoyed this random thought and look for my next one next time.
