Lou Manfredini: Hi!. I am Lou Manfredini, Ace's helpful hardware man with some terrific tips for your lawn and garden to help you go green and save money too. When it comes to lawn and garden, it's all about being green, and that's not just what you create but how you maintain it as well. You know all the talk is about creating your own garden as they are doing in the White House, and you too can do it. Not only to have fun but to save some money as well. And you can get things started by planting some seeds right now. Seeds are not expensive and you can get them started in these little peet pots, where you can put a little black dirts and peat moss, may be even some compost and plant your seeds and let them start to grow for a few weeks. And then from there you can transfer it out into your garden.
Now, you don't have to spend a lot of money on that soil, but you do want to treat it, naturally. More top soil, more compost, more peat moss, that you work into that soil to give it the new trees that your garden is going to need. Not only where you vegetables that look fantastic but you are saving money along the way and it also will taste terrific.
Now, when it comes to gardening, see one of the most important things is watering. And if you want to be conserving your water, then you might want to think about a rain barrel. This is a great way to capture the water that comes off of the roof and it can hold up to 50 gallons. Because right inside this container you connect a hose on the bottom and you are literally watering your garden for free.
Now, if a rain barrel is not in your future then of course, you want to use sprinklers. But here's the tip. You want to make sure that you buy the right sprinklers for the job. You don't want to over water, have larger sprinklers for small areas, because it's wasteful and it costs money.
Smaller ones like this smaller areas,we have got larger one here, if you got a large lawn to really cover the area. And if you are going to use them, another tip is to use a water timer. These water timers help you control the amount of water that circulates through. Last thing you want to do is, forget you have a sprinkler running and than three hours later, you soaked the lawn, wasted a bunch of water and wasted a lot of money as well.
And when it comes to maintaining the tools obviously matter too. I am a big fan of hand tools because it uses people power which is better for the environment. So, whether it's a pair of clippers or rakes, small shovels, or tools, that don't use fuel, may be they are a cordless battery operated or electric ones. It's better they work great and they are easy to maintain.
And finally how are you cutting your grass? Well, if you are in the market for a new lawn mower, because may be you are going to get rid of that landscaping service or you just want to update. Consider a cordless lawn mover or a push reel mower. These are a terrific way to cut the lawn, and better for Mother Nature.
