Golf is a gentleman's game. Good sportsmanship and fair play still count for something. Displaying proper etiquette will make up for your rubbish game. Preparation is essential in golf. If you are a beginner, learn the basic rules before you arrive. Know which course, you are playing, as formalities may differ, depending on their prestige. If you have any questions, call the pro shop in advance.
How you dress is extremely important. Get it wrong and you will never be invited back. You should wear a shirt with a collar, slacks or shorts of a conservative length, and golf shoes. A hat is also a good idea.
Arrive 30 minutes before your Tee time, or an hour if you intend to practice. Don't have a set of clubs? Then call ahead to ensure you can rent a set. Check in at the Pro shop, but never bring your clubs in. You should always be prepared to tip for items such as valet, bag drop, caddies, and the beverage cart. If you are a guest of the country club, your green fees are paid for. But be prepared with some cash nevertheless.
You will need your own bag as sharing isn't allowed. You will also need a towel, a divot repair kit, and a ball retriever. If you are a beginner, ensure you have a lot of balls. Proper.
