What makes a good golf grip? In a good golf grip we have our hands facing each other and about and square to the club face. So no matter, wherever our hands goes the club face is going to follow so we can have control over the golf ball.
How do we put our hands on the golf club? Well, I will have Kent come out here and help me show you how to do that. Now you can see what we did with Kent’s club here, we put a little dot on the little fatty part of his hand right here. The reason for this is, this is going to help him pick the golf club down here in his fingers. In the golf grip we want our club in our fingers and not the palm of the hand. This will allow us to cock and un-cock our wrists to help us generate power.
Now this is the top hand or the left hand for your right handed players. As you can see, Kent’s thumb is going down the right side of the shaft, his hands fitting on there nice and natural. If Kent was to look down in the addressed position, he would see a couple of knuckles.
Let us talk about the right hand now. The right hand or the bottom hand for your right handed players goes on the grip simply like if you were going to shoot a pistol. And as you can see, Kent takes the lifeline of his right hand and lets that overlap the thumb of his left hand. Then the thumb of his right hand goes down to the left side of the shaft. The key point to remember here is as you notice that Kent’s hands are nice and balanced and from an addressed position stand point. If you look at the B’s in his hands they will be pointing somewhere between his right ear and his shoulder. One arm is not pointing over here, they are both pointing in somewhat of the same direction. This tells us that our hands are facing each other and balanced.
An important point to remember is anytime that we grip the golf club; we always wanted to grip with the club head above our hand. The reason for this is, this will give us the ability to see the leading edge of the golf club and we can make sure that our hands are square with that. Most of us like to just grip the golf club and just hold on to it and we start in a bad position by having the club head above our hands, this will also help us keep our elbows in. So when we go bow to the golf ball, our arms, our hands are in the correct position.
