Port Royal Golf
Southampton, Bermuda
Bill Pitt: (General Manager) People who have never been to Bermuda need to
experience it. We have wonderful golf courses and most of all we have
wonderful beaches. Everyone don’t talk about our beaches but some of the
beautiful ocean, the colors that you see and along beaches nothing but the
best. I think I’m here with the best.
Port Royal was built to accommodate the general public and it opened in
1970. The government that worked here on design had ocean golf course
as part of its operational loneness in Georgia’s golf course. Most people
that come here think it’s private or semiprivate. The government really
takes care of this golf course as though a gym. It tests as the best of them
all and with the new renovation program they put in place there’s no doubt
that we have the best conditions around in Bermuda.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf has been awarded to Port Royal for the next
2 years prior to that it was held at the Mid Ocean Club and it was very
successful. This would be the first some of PGA event of this magnitude
will be held at Port Royal Golf Course. It would be proud and Honor to
host them come up to 19 to the 21st.
My favorite memory of the golf course is that I can remember when it was
built, what it looked like and I can remember now what it looks like. We
have the new renovation and I must say the new conditions that we have
now. New irrigation drains 419 Bermuda throughout. It’s going to be one
of the fabulous golf courses of the world.
Eric West: (Head Golf Professional) Well we got more golf courses per square mile
than anywhere else in the world and I would say probably a more quality
golf course as per square mile than most places in Mid Ocean and Port
Royal again two of the best golf courses in the world are you know are 10
miles apart and that is pretty rare in the world and you know just to have
for a tourist facility has as many golf courses as we do. Their quality and
the water everything is special here.
I say the holes were here before, it’s a 440 yard par four dug like right,
those awkward holes are very played. It’s just good in an awkward way it
just it makes hit every shot perfectly if you don’t hit a good shot your
going to make bogey driving too perfect second shot needs to be perfect
and then you know the greens are very small so you need to be good at
your chipping if you miss the green.
Now this is #16 probably our trademark golf a little we’ve moved it from
175 yards to 240 yards so as you can see the Tee box is lower and more
out of the water then you get—first you hit around this cove here. Wind
comes of the cliff so there’s 240 yards of wind and water, very difficult,
let me show you a couple of tips that had to deal with those holes so that
you can make bar.
So we’re here at the 60th hole of port royal golf course it’s beautiful day as
you can see over my right shoulder is the 16th green some 240 yards away
from this black tee. Over my left shoulder the blue tee which plays at 186
yards and the white tee which plays at 168 yards. The women’s tee which
is 160 yards and a cedar tee about 155 yards so what I’m trying to do here
is explain to you how to hit a cut off the coast back into the fin because the
wind hits the side of the cliff which doesn’t put the ball back into the
green and actually makes you drawn into the water.
Pretty good shot. That’s how it’s done. I hope you can do the same thing.
Marshlene Moniz: (Golf Assistant) I love everything about Bermuda. The people, the
island is beautiful. Friendly faces, it’s just a great place to be. I met a lot of
people here so far including Eric who’ve been made able to make a golf
pro out of me. I’m just telling you know enjoy yourself how beautiful the
island is. People like to see a friendly face when they come here and no
one is coming to a vacation to a major rule. So I try to make it as friendly
and as comfortable as possible so if I can do that fine.
Eric West: That’s how you hit a cut shot into 16th of Port Royal hope to see you down
here soon and I hope you have a good time playing.
