All right and also about his teeth and ears. Now, the teeth, you can do all sorts of things. You can use toothpaste, you can use granules on their food, you can give them more bones but we tend to give them Boneos when they go in their kennel all the time and that does keep a lot of the tartar off their teeth. Any tartar you got a little bit around his canines and his big carnacials here, any tartar, I use a dental scraper. Now this is quite a lethal piece of equipment so I’m very careful and I keep caution rule and antiseptic with me at all times. So that every time I use this I just quickly dip it into some soaped cotton wool with antiseptic, dog antiseptic because TCP is not supposed to be very good for dogs.
Now I’ll just give it a bit of cleanse and they’re used to this, it doesn’t take a second just with this scraper. Just lift up the stuff and just get it near the gums and just pull. It does tend to make the gums bleed a bit if you're not careful. So she’s making it bleed. There we go, this will take just a second. Wipe it on there, give the gum into a little bit f a wipe and that’s it.
Now collies don’t really need their big carnacial teeth scraped for shows. I won’t them today because he’s a bit hot. Because judges just tend to look at the front teeth with. They don’t tend to look anywhere else for collies. That’s a good boy.
So that’s teeth, very easy. I must admit sometimes I tend to cheat and use a fingernail shows rather than the dental spray not that the scraper does do a better job. Do the other side quickly, that’s it. It doesn’t take a second, very quick. And it’s quick. Go with the stuff just stopping the infections getting in. There we go. That wasn’t so bad was it?
And my last little tip is about ears. Now, sometimes when a puppy is teething, it might turn into Lassie and get these horrible pricked ears. Now Foxy’s ears aren’t pricked obviously but there is a little trick that you can help to train your ears over if a puppy is suddenly getting those ears pricked and that is to use some horrible jalap from the chemist, very old fashioned poultice., which is use to treat horses’ injuries, leg injuries and stuff. And it’s quite gruesome stuff, it’s grey and foul but it has the very useful properties of drying work hard in the air and also it dissolves in water. So if you need to take it off the ear, you need to just comb it straight off or dissolve it in water—dump the ear in some water.
So we’ll just take a little bit, I’ll put a tiny bit on foster, you won’t love me very much for this. A little bit on your finger and a bit of the ear you want to put it on is the top tip or third, just underneath, just about here. Just dump it—dump it on the ear and once it’s stuck, a little bit of talcum powder will help it dry, help it set. Just pat it on and blow the excess off and it’ll soon dry rock hard and when you want to take it off, just pull it off or you can just dissolve it in some water.
Now, we’ll just go and sort out your toenails. Now with the toenails, I don’t like guillotine-type of toe cutters because I think they’re lethal and I've got this wonderful—they look a bit like garden—little scissory type things, when you can see the nail that you're cutting. It’s not hit and miss. And our dogs don’t usually have problems with nails. Usually dogs are getting older whose nails tend to get longer because they don’t exercise much. If they have a nail—we can look at oh we can do this one I suppose. It’s just a question on fitting it into the little snipers and just going snip.
There we go, that’s quick snip and that’s it, very, very easy. Or if you have nails that you're a bit worried about and you don’t really want to risk cutting, I also have the nail file that makes it there quite happily having our nails done. Same principle as doing your own nails. It’s got a little groove going up the center of this that fits a dog’s nail quite nicely and this time, you just file the nail.
And the last but probably more important nails are the dew claws on the inside of the legs, it’s very important to check and they don’t overgrow. If they do, they get a bit long. Again, just give them a snip or give them a file specially on older dogs.
