What we’ll do is the tail itself. Now here, you do exactly the same way as you’ve done the rest. You just remove the excessive long hairs which you’ve been left and work from the root of the tail up towards the tip. And pull out all the longest hairs and you'll find that you get to the area at the tip of the tail with a lot of long dead coat.
Now, if you literally pull all of these, you will find that you have a very briskly, rather square end to the tail. So, it’s usually best to leave a little bit of this in, in order to make the end of the tail look much more natural. So, I'm just taking out the very longest hairs and leaving in the rest.
Now, to finish the tail, we now need to use the thinning scissors. Now, I use thinning scissors with one blade and one serrated edge as like this because I find this gives a very neat finish to the tail. So, holding the tail by the tip, you hold it in an upright position and start at the base of the tail taking all the longest hairs. If you pull them backwards like this, you'll find that it’s much easier to remove them and make a neat job. And as you can see, she doesn’t want me doing the tail at all, because once you're using the scissors it doesn’t make anything uncomfortable for her.
I’m moving quite tightly at the root of the tail using scissors at a slight angle. The tip is slightly in towards the body to give a rounded edge to the tail otherwise you'll end up with a square look. Do the same to the other side, working from the root towards the tip and when you get to the tip of the tail, you're going to pull the hairs backwards. And here, you hold the blades of the scissors with the tip slightly over the tip of the tail. This, in actual fact, cut some of the hairs right at the tip. It keeps it fairly short to give a slightly rounded edge to the top of the tail to again, make it look rather natural.
Then, work around to the front of the tail and that leaves you with a long briskly ends at the top which if there are few rather long ends here which I'm going to remove with finger and thumb. Then I back to using the scissors to just do over the tip.
Now, this is the way you do the docked tail but I the case of the undocked tail which are becoming more and more often, you'll find more and more often the undocked tail. And with that, you do the base of the tail in the same way and the back of the tail in exactly the same way but you do have to be much more careful in doing the edge of the tail, you get much more feathering on a complete tail and you have to use more finger and thumb to thin this out and remove all the long straggly ends in a same sort of way, the way you do the back legs and then you just tie the end to have a nice and neat edge to the length of the tail.
The tip of the tail, you do it in a slightly different way to the docked tail because you have to give an appearance of the shorter tail as possible. So, in order to do that, you have to take off a far more hair on the end of the tail very close to the tail bone which as you can see on this one with the docked tail, its actually down here although I've left some at the end on this tail in order to make the tail a better length so it balances with the top of her head.
And also, because it gives a much more natural look to the end but of course in a complete tail, you have a natural tip to the end anyway, it take this quite natural. So, as I was saying you take it much closer at the tip on the complete tail. Now, having done that, you can see we have a nice, neat tail but you have to work down into the bottom around the anus area and neaten all of that, blend in with the tail. Keep it fairly short in this area so that it looks neat. And if you pull it up slightly, anything that stays up and doesn’t fall immediately back, you remove it.
So, in the end you have a nice and neat rear end. Now, where the coat grows in different directions just below the anus, it grows in a U-shape and you have to make sure that you cut just the ends off to give a nice, neat, flat look in this area. Having done that, and you have the coat which now begins to standout lower on the bottom, this area, you again just shorten slightly not as much as you’ve done immediately below the anus but you do need to shorten it slightly just to again, give a more natural appearance.
