You know, I am always looking for that great bulb to put in the container, so I can bring it up to my patio and enjoy it through the summer. Well, I found this one here which is called the Hymenocallis, which is actually, Peruvian Daffodil, this variety of Sulphur Queen. Now, it is not going to last till summer long, but when the flower comes out, it is really spectacular, and has a wonderful fragrance. And, when I like about it is, it sort of got that amaryllis quality with a long stem, and then flower on the end, so it really makes a statement when I am sitting on your patio and very easy to take care of.
Now, they are a fairly, tropical plant. I should say tropical, they work in warmer zone. Those places where the temperatures in the winter time are not going to go below, let us say, minus 5—minus 8, they should be okay in the ground. If they are going to get a little colder on that, you are going to have leave them in the pot and bring them to an area where you are going to get about 13º to 16º over the winter time, so they do not look bad. But these are great little thing, they look like a little daffodil bulb and you can see, they have got out growth right there. This one is looks like it is going to have a secondary one for maybe next year. We will get a little bud of a flower.
Good solid ball, this is going to work out really well. Now, the other thing you need to know when you are planting this, this is what I planted about a month and a half ago, and as you can see, it is starting to grow. But, the mistake I made here is I planted it in a too small of a pot, like it is too … the width is okay but it needs more depth. I have got this thing, looks like a rat’s tail, sticking out the bottom. They are, very heavily rooted. They have big thick roots as you can see, and they really need a pot similar to this one.
You can see if I have gone to these sizes, it would have been perfectly okay. So, I got a nice dig, deep one, someone called this dahlia pots, and I will stick some soil in there. Now, they actually recommend, you plant this about five or six inches down. But I actually like planting a little shallower than that, and I found I had really good, success doing it. Now, let us fill it up about that level. I am going to grab some micoriza and I put it in a right root zone, and I am just going to set that just in like so. And, I am going to fill in with the rest of the soil. Now, they also like well drained soil, so I have taken this fairly pity soil, I have added a little bit of a sand here mix, this soil is going to drain well with this. Now, keep it moderately moist, and in a full sun location and then not too long, you are going to get a beautiful flower just like this one. And they are really spectacular, very fragrant, and they are going to make a great statement on your patio.
