Male: Preparing for special occasions and holidays can require some long term planning. For instance these symbols of Halloween just did not appear overnight. This grower of pumpkins had to start months ahead. Martin Marino has farmed organically for over 21 years. And this year his pumpkin crop at Earthbound Farms promises to be a big success.
Mark I am always amazed this time for year at the different varieties of pumpkins available.
Male: Right, people when they come to farm stands like ours on the roadside, they always want something different. So we have got the Atlantic giants, the big bombers and then we have got the real sweet little New England pie pumpkins. And we have a lot of the specialty pumpkins too. We have got the white luminous and the rouge vie de tompe or the Cinderella which is really flat.
Male: Very flat.
Male: Yes, and then we have got the cushaws and the blue Hubbard.
Male: The stem seems to be an important part of the way a pumpkin looks.
Male: The stem is kind of like the cap on the top of the fruit. So, when you leave the stem on, it gives it that really long shelf life and it kind of holds all the forces in the squash and keeps all the energy in it.
Male: Some people use artificial Christmas trees and now ceramic and plastic Jack-O’-Lanterns are popular. I guess I am still a little old fashioned because I like to choose my pumpkin each year so I can carve it the way I want to. From the garden, I am Allen Smith.
