I just can’t help but admire plants that have enduring qualities. Particularly when I comes to houseplants. Let’s face it our homes can be a brutal environments for plants during the winter. So any of that can survive these conditions gets my vote. This Christmas cactus is an old favorite of mine and is a good example of a plant that can endure.
It’s easy to see why beauty was a favorite of our grandparents. This are called Christmas cactus because they bloom or last around Christmas. And if you’re like me, you’ll probably find its common name is much easier to remember than its botanical one schlumbergera.
Now these plants are about five years old and each year they just get larger and more graceful. While that may seem like a long time, it’s not uncommon for this houseplant to live 15 or 20 years.
In light summer and early fall the flower buds will begin to form this is the time to cut back on water to the point the foliage begins to loss some of its glossy appearance. Then it’s the day shorten this particular exotic blooms that by the way coming a wide range of festive colors begin to appear.
You can find this plant in garden centers in nurseries all year around. And always in flower around the holiday, you should remember that even when they’re not blooming they make attractive house plants.
If you’re looking for a low maintenance plant that could help you decorate for the holidays you might give one of this old standbys to try. From the garden, I’m Allen Smith.
