Marsha Goldberg: You take the plant out of the pot and all the leaves of this lower portion so that we can actually place the plant right there at ground levels, so just the top is showing. What will happen is that the plant will grow roots all along here. So you got a huge roots on down here and additional roots on and then it will spread out through the ground and the more roots and the better fruit development.
Gord: Perfect! Now, this is sort of a unique one wood. What makes that one?
Marsha Goldberg: This is call the Sicilian Saucer, it is a Sicilian Saucer of Italia heirloom new to me last year and it is a beautiful flattened to beefsteak kind of a orange red color and amazing slicer and flavor.
Gord: It that really
Marsha Goldberg: Just fabulous, and produces as well in all part of the world. Sometimes with all people loves a larger tomatoes. But they do not which is mature here. So we always experimenting with varieties that have a light quicker maturity dates and this is definitely one of the winners so we are growing it again.
Gord: Now, I interrupted you about to some—micronizer looks like.
Marsha Goldberg: Yes, I am to start, good little sprinkle and of course you have, you mix it up in everything when you put in anything in the holes you got to mix it up really, really good. And a little bit of green sand which is actually green sand. And it is full of potassium. A potassium is one of those ingredients that tomatoes really need at all. It also has magnesium in it, which is really one of the secrets of especially Italian and English gardeners from days gone by. You can also use aspens salts for the same reason. We cut and it is really important to have that for your fruit set. So, then we burry this little lady right up to where those leaves were
Gord: Gets often hard for people to get around that concept because we have always telling them “Do not bury it in any lower than the root level you”.
Marsha Goldberg: Tomatoes are very different, very different in that way. They will start to shoot out roots all over the place. Better roots, better fruit.
Gord Perfect! Now I noticed you have got a watering can and it is not the straight water, what have you got in there?
Marsha Goldberg: Well, to get them started at this stage, they huge to uses of nitrogen among the best sources is really available to the plants just like liquid fish fertilizer. We give them a good little drink and have to replant them. And if anyone ever tried to put tomatoes cages or sticking around tomatoes when they get older, we will know that is always wise to do it with early to take. These are fabulous for especially for bush type tomatoes like this are. And you just put it around when they are little and then they can use grow quite happily after that. .
Gord: Now you have a got a great location of plant tomatoes here too, don’t you?
Marsha Goldberg: Well, it is a southwest facing sloop in a valley, so we here huge amount of heat. It is a real microclimate and tomatoes are being tropical plants love it. As long as I get the water, they will grow and do extremely well.
Gord Great will thanks for showing us your secrets.
Marsha Goldberg: You are very welcome.
