How to Handle Falling as a Leading Belayer

Chris: Falling happens expectedly and unexpectedly. You have to know how to handle each scenario. The first scenario involves the climber yelling take. Billy: Take. Chris: When hear take, take the excess slack out of the rope while stepping backwards and sitting down on the rope like this. Here it is in real time. Billy: Take. Chris: The second scenario involves the climber yelling falling or unexpectedly pitching off the rock. Here’s what you do. Instead of taking any slack and sitting down like you did in the take scenario, you leave a little slack out, stay right on your feet, and get ready for the fall. Billy: Falling. Chris: Let's see that fall again, but first on a side view. If I’m standing 10 feet away from the first bolt, I’m killing out here and my climber falls, I’m not only going to get drag along the route. I’m going to get smashed to that wall. So what you need to do is stay away from a couple of the first bolt at all times. That way you're ready for the big fall. Billy: Falling.
