Hi! I’m Jennifer McEntire with the Institute of Food Technologists. And today, I’m going to be talking about how you can handle food safely which includes separating raw from cooked foods, washing your hands, checking the temperature in your refrigerator, defrosting or thawing foods, microwaving foods and checking the temperature, cooking hamburger and checking the temperature, and storing left overs.
The few things you’ll need are food thermometer, a refrigerator thermometer and some place to wash out the sink with soap and water. When we’re working with foods, we want to be careful when we’re using sharp knives.
Before we begin, I’ll tell you a little bit about myself. I got my undergraduate degree in food science from the University of Delaware and I went on for my PhD also in food science with a focus on food safety from Rutgers University. I also have a two-year-old daughter, so food safety is very important to me in my household.
Now that you know a little bit about me, let’s get started talking about food safety and how you can handle your food safely.
