Audra: Time for spring cleaning, the way to make some extra cash while you're at it. Jeanette Povini is here with a better way to save by having a yard sale.
Jeanette: Okay, here are a few simple rules that will make your yard sale a success and more fun too. First off, collect your inventory. Be brutal. Scawer your garage, kitchen, book shelves and closets. Now if you're the sentimental type, have a friend or family member help you clear out those dust collectors.
Store everything in black plastic bags or boxes with lids. Now, when it's out of sight, there is less chance that you'll change your mind. Decide on a date and be sure to check and see what the weather forecast will be. Then advertise in the paper and online. Mention furniture, baby items, garden tools and other hot items that are usually a hip. Put up neighborhood signs on sale day. Now, you'll sell more if you have a price on everything.
Items that look good will also sell better. So run the dishes through the dishwasher, hang up clothes and display books and kids toys so that people can shop easily. You should also have your kids participate. They will really learn the value of a dollar by being involved. And don’t bring unsold items back into the house no matter what.
Audra: Thanks a lot Jeanette. And on Wednesday, she’s going to show us buying travel insurance is a better way to save.
