Mike: Hi! I'm Mike in Austin. My sister is an alcoholic and abusive to our family. What steps can I take to help her? Harriet de wit: Mike that's a real problem when you have a family member who has an alcohol problem and especially when it affects, directly affects the family. The main thing that you can do for her is to be supportive and to be available and to not judge her and recognize that alcoholism is a disease and it's not a failure of the will and it's not the decision that she's making. There are some resources available. You might be able to help her to try and find a counselor or an Al-Anon group in your neighborhood and some people also try an intervention that would also probably be facilitated by a professional before you do that.
