Terry Hall: Can you give me the balloon Pete’s.
Jennifer: This is part of 4 year old Pete’s regular therapy. At age 2 his communications skill started to slip.
Julie Mitchell: If he wasn’t following simple directions and didn’t seem to be excited about playing, learning.
Jennifer: Pete was diagnosed with Autism, his mother Julie enrolled him in therapy, were Pete worked with therapists but Julie was not involved. After meeting Terry Hall they began using the Denver model technique. It teaches play skills and life skills.
Terry Hall: We would really find that getting their parents involved in being a big part of the intervention has been a much big plus.
Jennifer: The team approach is individualized to the child. It focusses heavily on verbal skills and communication.
Terry Hall: It really is a prognostic factor fro how they will be able to function as in older person.
Jennifer: In the past 50% of Autistic children were non verbal but 75% to 95% of Denver model children talk by age 5. Nick lost his verbal skills at 14 months.
Michelle Zebrowski: Just went away and he was none ware of his environment.
Jennifer: Now he is in school playing soccer and improving every day.
Michelle Zebrowski: I feel let me see Nicks smiles and be able to talk to people it make so right that.
Jennifer: It’s not easy though both Nick and Pete have to work at it between 40 and 50 hours a week. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
