Hello my name is Deaver Brown publisher at Simply Magazine at SimplyMagazine.net we do audio books and software. And my wife owns the company and my daughter works at me. We got a lot of emails asking about out business books. Well, how you are hired somebody? I mean what do you do? And my advised is to serve back and stop thinking about this is so being complicated.
There are three aspects to hiring somebody; the first one is technical skills and people look at this so hard and so long. It is unbelievable. And actually that is the easiest to judge. To they have the technical skills to do the job. The second question is can do. Can they do the job? And usually that is pretty easy. The third one is will they do the job and that is almost impossible. Because you do not know whether somebody you are interviewing will do it or would not do it.
And this comes with Robert Haft he had a great point. You need to focus on will do. And you cannot ask directly because most of us when hiring somebody we want to fill slot want to do it now. And we say you can do this kid and you will yes. wrong thing. Find out what they like to do that is Haft’s idea. Find what they like to actually do. If there are sales people do they like people they do like to talk to them. Now feel like to talk to people and they like to get on the phone and probably is could be good. They do not like to get the phone and they do not like people the probably be back. And one of the things I notice about lot of sales people go on me is they do not like people. It is very simple they do not people how you going to sale. So, that what that is.
Now, in bookkeeping you need somebody that likes to be meticulous, and careful, and joy getting things right so job have certain temperamental aspect and I talk about this business start up. It is very important. The people need to have the temperament and when I wrote my book the entrepreneurs guide I got a nasty review in part from Peter Drucker that he said anybody can do it. The risk was flattering so I call him on the phone and I said Mr. Drucker they cannot but will they. And we have a wonderful talk about that because guess what, they could but would not. It did not make them happy. And if you try to run your business and your are ding the job you do not like even you can do it, you are going to go nuts. It you are the VP of sales you know like itself you are going to go nut. So when you hires somebody make sure they want to do it.
The last point is a free sample one. Listen to the story and say look, is this something you want it to do. Is this something that you are not above in other words is this job below you 50% will say it is, 50% will say they want to move on while you can exclude now. The second thing to say is in the first week you have to be here forty hours. If you are not you are fired. If your mother dies and you go to the funeral you are fired and then you can make a point that I do that I have some employee’s mothers three times in one year. It is an excuse. But the point is they have to be warning to do that.
