The Basic Stance
Alright let’s begin with the hand position. We’re in our basic stance. We’re going to put our front arm out palm down totally palm down and then we’re going to take our top hand or our power hand and put it palm up. Now we close both hands. We’re going to rotate it with our thumbs so that it’s at 12 o’clock and go one additional step forward. Now we’re going to bring in the hands over the top and put in the shoulder area. This gives us our most powerful and best hand stance.
What we want to do also is show all the different styles we see major league players and different players holding hands in all different positions. If they elevate the hands and they go up or they are way or they are down, or they’re in the back you know stretched to the back none of these positions are power position because it separates the hands from the body. Would we hand wrestle with our hand extended out or would we want that hand to be inside where it’s close to the body.
Let’s think about it this way if we were throwing a punch wouldn’t that be the position where we would want our hands. If we elevated our hands that would not be correct. If we moved our hands away from our body we’re not going to be as strong. What’s behind those hands nothing so there is no support for those hands so let’s bring the hands to the most powerful— we’ll do it again the most powerful hitting position and well set it up. What we want to do at this point is emphasize how the hands work. The bottom hand is they take me to the ball hand. It is an L arm and it forms an L.
The top hand is the power hand it forms a V. The bottom hand has no eyes but the top hand has 4 eyes 1, 2, 3, and 4. Those are the knocking knuckles of the type hand on the back. In that position then, you can understand you want to keep the hands inside as we go to the ball so if we were to take out coil and stride and pivot we would have what we call a power V and we like to say, “Victory means the power V” that elbow supporting those hands on the way to the ball, the body supporting the back and in perfect power position. There is an equation that says this, if in your process of going to the ball did the hitter get weaker or did the hitter get in full strength.
This is position is full strength. Power position means that we rotated and inside the ball. The hands come out to make contact and when they do the elbows do not extend at this point but all of the energy is exactly in the hands. So we almost got completely out of our power V. Our bottom hands still forms an L at this point and maybe even extend it. The top hand faces up and as we open that hand it’s up and the bottom hand faces down. So these are the hand positions. You can be a good hitter right away by taking the pound and knocking knuckles, knuckles to the sky as we pivot, knuckles will go in the chin chest zone and when we make contact the knuckles will point exactly in the direction of the pitch.
Other ways that the hands work where it would not be correct is with the back elbow up for it example now he has pulled those hands out of position and unless he adjust when he hits here those knuckles will point up and not at the ball. So go to contact knuckles up, if you open up the hands at that point the top hand is in front of the back and this forces a wrist roll and poor extensions so we’ll just rotate that hand where it should be where it’s under the bat so that’s top hand under the bat and bottom hand over the bat. This is the best hitting position that you can be in with the hand in front of the body, a good burn front side and with on the L bat.
