How to Hit a Better Tennis Return of Serve
Mel: Hi, it's Mel again with yellowballfever.com. Here, we will take a look at the return of serve. Lots of people think return of serve is just like a groundstroke. It's not. The way I like to think of it, I like to take half groundstroke half a volley. If you haven't seen my volley video, good take a look at it. We are going to use the footwork that we used in volley video and add it to return of serve. The first thing that I would like is a small compact swing, everybody here you here that from everybody you need to have a small compact swing. From this, whenever we take a small compact swing, it's not enough power. So, we need to find some source of energy to help it give a faster stroke, a better return of serve. The way I would like to do is I like to use it from my legs. So, just like in the volley a split step when the ball comes instead of taking the outside step, a lot of times somebody has got really fast serve. We don't have enough time to take that step. So, whenever it comes in, split step and then I am just going to love the way, whichever way it goes, I am just going to put the weight on that leg, that's going to give me where i can be in a position to move forward. So, as I come in to the ball, split step both the way, take a small backswing, we don't need a big leap, we just need to take the racquet back and then I am going to launch forward and I am going to try it at a timing so that when I made contact with the ball, this foot didn't hit the ground here. This foot hits the ground before momentum stops we are going to try and end up with return around bottom of the neck. So, contact the ball where your 1.30 again. Make sure whenever you make contact with the ball that you are moving in at 1.38 angle or at a little diagonal. Do you know, I want to move parallel to the baseline.
