How to Hit a Better Tennis Serve
Betsy: Hi, I am Betsy and this video is for yellowballfever.com. I am talking little about how you should be thinking as you step up to the line to serve whether you are playing singles or doubles. You want to try and take a look at the service court across the net that you are serving into, much like a baseball pitch or looks it home plate when it has a batter up ready to slug ball apart. You want to plan in your head, you want to visualize in your mind where you want the ball to go and as you do that you also want to think about how that means you need to strike the ball up above. So, if I am standing here and it's the first point of a game in singles and I am planning to come to the net, I am thinking I am going to serve the ball down the middle and follow it to the net. So, you have to make a plan before you start to serve otherwise you don't have anything. Think about when you are going up to hit the ball. If I am hitting the ball down the middle on my serve, I will be turning my racquet and meeting it like this, if I am going to hit the ball right to the left side of the court, I would be turning my racquet to hit the right side of the ball over here. So, really when you are serving your target is the ball, it's not the court over there but you still want to visualize the flight of the ball you want to send across the net. So, I am going to serve this ball down the middle, hopefully, and I would have planned to do that by reaching up and turning my racquet to hit the back of the ball. Now, if I want to serve the ball off to the right side of the court, I am going to be thinking about hitting the right side of the ball. So, as I go up I am thinking about reaching up and hitting the right side of the ball. A little bit wide but if the general direction is right.
