How to Hit a Better Tennis Topspin Backhand
Stuart Row: Hi everyone, this is Stuart Row talking through yellowballfever.com and right now I am going to teach you how to get some backhands. So, there are two types of backhands in tennis, first is the topspin backhand and second is the slice. Right now we will go with topspin backhand. What you want to do is make sure you have a continental grip and you are in ready position 0.22 to recognize that you are going to be hitting your backhand. Pull your racquet back and turn your shoulder. That's how you got to move to the ball. So, you guys do is pull your racquet back, take a step forward, adjust yourself, step in and make sure your racquet face is turned down when you back swing. So, it is like you are sweeping the floor as you approach to make contact, you got to drop the racquet head and come to contact right here. Make sure that if you drop the racquet head you make contact with the racquet horizontal to the court, otherwise you are going to pop the ball up. So, you make contact, keep your arms straight and finish high, once you get loose point, we are just going to let the racquet fall behind our back. That's the foul through you and that's the topspin backhand. Second type of backhand, we are going to talk about is the slice backhand. We are going to use the same grip. In this time, as I said, bring the racquet back to aside, right here. We are going to rest it in our left hand and bring it back a little bit higher. This is how we are going to move to the ball when we are hitting the slice backhand. Notice now the racquet face is opened in back swing this time. We don't have to close it off, if it's opened right here, we will move with our racquet already back, adjust ourselves turn, step in to make contact with the ball and set it coming all the way below the ball then lifting up, we are going to come same level of the ball, drive through it, it finish with our shoulders still turned away from the net. When you finish, you should be able to stand and you will be perpendicular to the net this way, this was how you control the ball and really drive behind the ball at the same time creating slice with an open racquet face. So, that's your slice backhand.
