How to Hold Hairdressing Scissors

So with scissors, when you hold scissors, incidentally these scissors have got little fingers, which is brilliant, because it gives you a bit more power to the blade. They always fit on this finger here, not on this one or this one, it's always this one.

And the other thing is that you have creases in your fingers here, here, and what you do is, rest your scissors across that, they will work a little bit better, and they are rigid. They are not going to flop around. By pushing away, it puts tension on the blade, and also, the great thing about your little finger on here, you can see, by pulling it in, it gives me a lot of tension. So if I pull in with my other fingers and push with my thumb, this becomes very solid.

Now, when you put your thumb in, you don't put your thumb in like this, or use your scissors like that. You only use the edge of your thumb a tiny bit.

The either way is sometimes you cut hairs by using your finger on the back. Can you see how I have wrapped all my fingers around to hold that? So sometimes when you are cutting, this is how you are cutting, not just like this. Sometimes like this, this is the scissor action. So some people hold their scissors here, and that's retrieving.

Now, the little finger that you see here is brilliant, because when you are retrieving you are using your little finger to flick scissors around. You see? Some people, such as myself; so this is my cutting position, when I rest, I curve the scissors around and I rest them here. Sometimes they are there, sometimes they are here, depending on the length of the blade. When I want to retrieve my scissor, I have lifted a section up, they spin around, and I cut.

Now, this movement I find difficult doing it slowly for you, because normally I do this very fast. If I do it quickly it becomes more natural, because you are not thinking about it. So you have to learn the slow way first. The bigger the scissor, the harder it is to flick underneath. You have got to be careful then. It's how we hold our scissors.
