The reason I do not like holding the pick like this is because it tends to move sideways like this and I loose control for accuracy. Instead, what I proposed is to hold the pick like this.
See, I am putting my finger behind it. Like that and the thumb on top, and not the whole a lot need to stick out. You do not have to have this much on the pick sticking out when you push it back into the hand like that, so you do not have so much to stick it out, see? Then, it is easier to control, the pick motion.

And I try to use up and down stokes as much as I can.

In order to play fast line is like this.

You have to start by practicing slowly on one note like this.

And do it small motions from there in your right hand.
