Hey, I’m Nate Savage and I’m going to teach you how to hold your electric guitar today. Now we’re going to have three options on how to hold our electric guitar.
The first one is going to be the casual method when, it’s sitting over your right leg. The 2nd option is going to be the classical method when it’s sitting over you left leg and finally we’re going to stand up and practice our guitar a little bit.
So let’s take a look at the 1st method and that’s the casual method where just have it sitting over your right leg. Most people like this the best because it’s easy to just sit down with your guitar and start practicing.
So there are a couple of things you want to remember when you’re using this style. 1st thing is to keep the guitar close to your body, bring your right hand over and you use that to hold it in right there then you can bring left hand up and get it in a good position to start doing some practicing.
Now let’s take at look at the classical method and all we’re going to do is take the guitar and switch it from my right leg to our left leg. I have a foot stool down here that I’m using to bring my left knee up. So a couple of things you’ll notice about this method is it brings the neck over to my left side quite a bit more than casual method. That helps me give a better fret access and it helps me to able to get the higher notes on the guitar a little bit easier. One person that uses practicing technique is John Petrucci if you ever see him play or show you some lessons or something.
You’ll notice that his guitar is almost always over his left leg because some of the stuff he plays is just insane and it’d be really difficult to play that stuff if it is over your right leg.
The last way to hold the guitar is standing up. Now one thing that you’ll going to need to have if you’re standing up player playing is a good guitar strap. I think I pay 20 bucks for this strap at my local music store to Planet Waves regular nylon strap so strap that on your guitar on the strap buttons put it around you and stand up.
And you’ll going to notice that the guitar is in about the same position that it was when I was sitting down. I like to have my strap adjusted like that so it feels the same whenever I’m sitting down and practicing or standing up and practicing.
So mess around with each of these 3 methods of holding the guitar and pick which ever works best for you.
