How to Hold the Crochet Hook and Yarn

Hi! I am Toni Lipe with Toni's Design Studio. Today, we are talking about how to crochet. Right now, let us talk about how to hold the hook and the yarn. There is no one perfect way to do this. It is a personal preference. Most people start out holding the hook as if it were a pencil. The yarn is held in the left hand and in order to maintain a slight tension on the yarn supply, it’s a good idea to thread the yarn through your fingers and I’ll show you how we do that in just a minute. The left hand is actually holding your crochet fabric, while your right hand is making the stitches. You only have, generally, one stitch on your crochet hook at a time, unlike knitting where you may have up to 100 or 200 stitches on your knitting needle. So you are only knitting one crochet in one stitch at a time. So this is how you hold your yarn through needle and your yarn in your left hand. Next, we’re going to talk about actually getting started to crochet.
