Hello and welcome to WebInformant.tv. I’m David Strom and today I will show you how to set up your own mailing list and becoming your own internet publisher for less than $75 year.
There are 5 steps in the process so let’s get started.
First you need to buy a domain name. I use godaddy.com. Go over there and try to find something that isn’t yet taken. Once we do, we pay the $8 fee or more if you want a fancier name or something other than .com.
The second step is to go to emwd.com and sign up for their hosted mail man service. Click on the hosting tab at the top of the page. Expand the mail man hosting section below. Click on the order now button and you’ll see this screen. The important thing here is to have a domain name exactly as you just specified in go daddy service in this field and also to name your mailing list with a meaningful word they use by your going forward.
Once you give them your credit card information, they’ll send you an e-mail that looks like this and has three pieces of important information on. The first piece is the name of the mailing list server which they call list dot your domain name. The last line is the IP address is also noteworthy the and get the to the third piece and the second.
The third step is we have to setup your domains. Log in to your go daddy account manager. Go on to the domain’s tab, my domains and click on the domain that you just registered and go to the total DNS screen.
There are several entries that you’ll need to have here for the mailing list to work properly. First you need to setup the A host name for your list which is called list and have it point to the IP address that we just took note of. In my case, it’s 74.52.21.50. You also need several entries in the C names section, one for POP, SMTP, IMAP, email and mail and you’ll notice that they all point to the name called list.webinformant.tv in my case. So that’s the same server that mail man is setting up.
Fourth step is to begin setting up the mailing list server. The emwd’s e-mail confirmation also has a URL that links to the mail man control panel along with the password to access it. You see the general options screen and there are a couple of parameters that you might want to customize, including the list name and the ministry e-mail address. What do you want to place in the subject line of each e-mail that’s to be transmitted. You can also setup a special address for all replies to be directed to or you use your own e-mail address.
Scroll down on this screen and set the reminder for monthly password reminders to no. If you don’t want to send a welcome message to new subscribers, also set that to no, click on the non-digest options at the up and you’ll see screens here to enter the mailing furthered message that been sent out.
Now comes the last step; to test the mail man server with a couple of e-mail address such as you and your friend and make sure the e-mails are sent correctly and will work properly. You add w-mail subscribers on this screen under membership management and just make sure that each address is on a separate line inside this box and you can check the options above the box for sending welcome messages or not and no for notifications to the list owner of new subscriptions.
Also one confusing thing is to set everyone’s moderation bit to on which means that anyone trying to post a message must first be approved.
