Hi I am David Epstein this is Growing Wisdom and I am on the hunt today for weeds in the land and I have got my little handy tool here. We are going to try to get rid some of the weeds but first we have to identify them.
The first weed is the dandelion and notice it got this elongated wide leaves, really stands out against the grass. There is also the tooth nature toothed leaves.
You always have the option treating chemically with this stuff but I do not like to so we are going to take this out using our weeder. Dandelion roots as you probably have heard a very long, so it is important to try to get all of the root out.
The next weed I want to show you is ground ivy and this is a very difficult weed in the lawn. Ground ivy is a vine and it gets entangled on the grass blades, it is very difficult to remove by hand. It will take you days to pull out a lot of this or you will have to use an herbicide. Now there are organic herbicides out there. You have to try to find one that controls ground ivy. If you cannot you may have to go to the chemical side of things, but that is a personal choice. I always recommend going organic but if you are managing turf and you do not want to have these in you lawn you may have to use a chemical. Or you could actually remove the turf with the ground ivy in it and replant it. If you do not want to use anything at all.
The next weed I want to talk about is clover that gets embedded within the grass. I cannot use my little tool to pull out the clover. The clover is green, feels great on your feet, rabbits love it. They will actually eat that instead of some of your other plants in the garden so why clover. Just leave it.
Onto our next weed, it is called the broadleaf plantain. You want to definitely remove this by hand if can during the course of the summer because this little seed had here that is beginning to form pump outs of new seeds and this will actually come back again next year.
The next weed I want to talk about is common blue violet. They have this heart shape leaf here and they of course get the blue flowers in the spring time. You can go around and pull out some of them by hand. Here is what I recommend. Keep your lawn a little bit low, you will really do not notice it.
So, this next weed is called chickweed, you actually can eat it. They sell it in some seed catalogue, few to grow. Chickweed tends to die out in a hotter drier months of the summer but I recommend just keep your lawn healthy, you do not need to use an herbicide to control this.
Our last weed for the day is crabgrass. It does come up fairly easily. Pull it out or just remember next spring were you had a very heavy infestation of crabgrass and apply a lot of corn gluten and that should help to keep the crabgrass down for next year.
There are certain weeds that maybe you have to control with chemicals like creeper I talked about that is a bad weed, but part of this edition of Growing Wisdom is learning to live with the few weeds.
