Hi! My name is Nate Savage and today, I’m going to teach you the names of the strings of the guitar.
When I first started playing guitar for the longest time, I couldn’t remember the names of the strings, I don’t know why, I guess I had some kind of mental block or something, I was only like thirteen. So what I did is I came up with an acronym for you guys, so you’d be able to remember it if you forget.
What are these? Let me tell you the names of the strings first and then I’ll tell you the acronym. If you look down here on your low E string, that’s called the sixth string, down here. That’s your E. The next one over is you’re A string, D, G, B, and the first string, the highest one is another E string. So two outside strings are the same, their both Es. And the Acronym that I came up with for this is EAT ALL DAY GO TO BED EARLY, because I love to eat and I love to sleep, so that’s works perfectly for me. It’s easy for me to remember.
If you want to think about how the guitar is tuned and where those string names came from. Basically, all I did, all you have to think about is four’s, what we call four’s, so you have an E note, you’re going to have E, count four away from there, E, F, G, A. the next string is an A. And four away from that, from the A note, is A, B, C, D. Then, if you started at the D string, the next string is four away from there, and so on. So you have D, E, F, G.
Now, here’s where it changes a bit, from the G string to the B string is only a third, so instead of four away, you're just going to count three away. So we have G, A, B, that’s the only one on the guitar that’s different. So, go from your B, now your second string all the way to your E string, your high E string, and that goes back to fourths. Then you’re going to start on B, C, D, E and that’s another four. That’s another way you can remember. You can either remember, it's all fourths, except from your GGB, or you can just remember the acronym, EAT ALL DAY GO TO BED EARLY or whatever works for you.
