By now you have noticed that we have only served with the modified motion. Now if you take this shortcut it's important to start with the racket resting on the shoulder and the hand to the ear just like talking on a telephone. Some of you will remember the old instructions about the back-scratch position with that elbow pointing up to the sky, good.
Now forget those instructions, better to watch a quarter back in football. The elbow never raises up to the sky like that old trophy position. On the other hand, that motion, that old trophy position motion can actually lead to major shoulder injuries. Do keep in mind however, that after a few hours or a few days of a modified serve, it's usually time to transition to that full and complete service motion.
Noticed that when Colindy(ph) starts her racket is totally relaxed and supported with her left or non-racket hand. This is critical. In fact, Colindy should be able to take her right hand off the racket without the racket falling, since the weight of the racket head is fully supported by her non-racket hand. I also her served without moving her feet. These two foundations accomplish many things.
First, if her wrist begins relaxed, it will be easier for her to keep it relaxed and second, if she is not allowed to move her feet she will automatically learn to toss more accurately in less time.
To me a correct starting position is one of the most important parts of serving. Hold the ball in the left hand with the thumb and first two fingers and then support the racket with the last two. This habit will serve you well for your entire life at all levels of play.
Fast Lane Tennis Summary
I know some of you watching this table say, sure Joe that looks easy but the average player hasn't always learned the right technique from this side. I agree but I also know that a beginner can go to ten different tennis teachers and learn what appears to be ten different ways to serve.
However, in most cases you will find that the fundamental issues are quite similar. They will all agree that balance is important and that ultimately also a relaxed wrist with a grip that allows for maximum range of motion is also critical. Please just understand this.
Neurological pathways are most open when we are young and more close as we get older. Here is just one example, try this. Cross your arms, now cross them the other way, awkward isn't it. This explains the saying; you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Therefore, if possible start them young and start them right.
In the final section, we will share the two most common problems novice players face with their serves and some quick-fix suggestions. One thing is clear. Every single player especially at beginning levels need as much quick success as possible. These small successes are what keeps everyone coming back for more and that's what's important.
