How to Improve Your Drops, Dinks & Chips

If you happen to see our fast lane tennis series, you might remember that Colindy's first lessons two years ago were to get a feel for drops and dinks, hitting back spin for control. The purpose was to provide a foundation upon which to build many other shots.

Varying ball speed, spin, and arc is a primary tactic to break down many otherwise solid players. Here she is alternating topspin two handers that bounce up high and slice one handers that stay low. We sometimes joke that she should make them hit out of their zone until they start to grow.

A second way to use the variety of slice is to chip in approach shot and move in to volley. One benefit of the chip approach shot is to mix in well discussed drop shots. The opponent stays back looking for the chip then when they look for the drop shot and move forwards, the deep and low approach shot is twice as effective. The same variations just demonstrated are equally valuable when returning serve, chip and charge or drop and charge. Great job Colindy!
