Will Hamilton: The first step of the serve progression is learning how to swing up with the tennis ball correctly. Now on the serve fundamental section of the website, steps number eight and nine talked about how all pros swing up and pronate to get to their contact point. They start by swinging up on edge at the tennis ball. Their racket and their hitting arm are going to form an L above their head. And then at the last second the racket is going from on edge to the strings facing and making contact with the tennis ball, that's pronation. Now knowing how the pros do this doesn't necessarily teach you how to do it. So, in this video we're going to build up to that motion. And what you want to do is start in the body position I am in right here. My entire body is square to the net, my feet and my upper body are facing the net and I've got the tennis racket resting on edge on my shoulder.
And what you need to do, it's very simple, all you do is just swing up on edge with the tennis racket above your head. We clip to a couple of different perspectives of this motion but it's really not anymore complicated than this, the racket from your shoulder just goes up on edge. Now that you got that relatively simple motion down, we'll throw in the pronation. So, we're going to start in that same body position, I'm facing the net, rackets on my shoulder. And now I'm going to swing up on edge and then pronate, I'm going to turn at the racket face so that my strings are facing the net, once I've got the racket fully extended above my head. So, let's watch it one more time, rackets on the shoulder, I start by swing up on edge and then I pronate. And one of the other keys of this motion is to make sure that when you practice that you're facing the net because when you make contact with the tennis ball, when you're actually serving, your upper body is going to be facing the net. So, you want to practice in this body position.
