What do you do if you are in a situation where you do not have enough light? It really depends on what are trying to accomplish and these are your best options.
Number one, you can increase you aperture diameter. Now, you will be physically limited by the capability of the lens itself, but if you have two lenses and once at 2.8 and once at 1.4, a 1.4 lens is going to give you a significant more amount of light.
Number two, you can decrease your shutter speed. You will be limited by how much movement either on your part or your subject’s part is acceptable. An image stabilize lens and tripod can greatly aid in taking slower exposures.
Number three, you can increase your ISO sensitivity. Just remember, the higher your sensitivity, the more noise will appear. I like to take pictures at 400 or below, but I understand there are times you need to do this.
Number four, you can use more powerful or additional light sources such as the sun or an external or an artificial flash or a diffuser or a bounce card. So, your four best options to increase your available light are increase your diameter, decrease your shutter speed, increase your sensitivity and use additional lighting.
