Let's talk about tyre wear for a minute. Remember the old penny test. If you could see the top of Lincoln's head, it was time for new tyres. Well, testing shows that you should probably replace them sooner. That 230 seconds of an inch of an tread just isn't safe anymore. Look at the stopping distance of a tyre with 230 seconds of an inch of tread. Compare it to the one with 430 seconds. What a dramatic difference.
So how can you tell that you've 430 seconds or more. Simple! Use the new Quarter test. If you could see the top of this wig, then by George it's time for new tyres. Of course, be sure to keep your tyres correctly inflated to your vehicle's manufacturer recommended level. It's the easiest thing you can do to ensure the performance and long life of your tyres.
But remember hot air expands, so be sure to check in the morning before the heat of the day. Of course, at Belle tyre, we can make things a little easier by nitronizing your tyres with nitrogen inflation. Nitrogen does not react to differences in outside temperature or leak out over time as readily as air does. So, it maintains your tyre's proper inflation much longer.
Either way invest in a good tyre gauge. The water service stations are notoriously inaccurate and while you're checking pressure, go ahead and check the valve stems for any damage and make sure they're all caped tightly.
Finally, make sure you rotate your tyres every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Rotation will extend the life of your tyres and ensure even wear performance, traction and the best ride possible.
