Male Speaker1: Did you know study showed that 64% of all traffics incidents on a roadway are vehicle breakdowns. I wonder how many breakdowns are the result of neglect or the lack of basic maintenance. Are you following your vehicle's recommended service intervals?
Male Speaker2: In this picture, you can see erosion of the water pump impellers caused by cavitation, erosion, corrosion. Basically air bubbles in the system impacting metal surfaces especially aluminum. If you maintain the vehicle's cooling system, you can help avoid expensive repairs, maximize the life of the heating and cooling system and the engine itself.
Let's look in an owner's manual to see the cooling system maintenance schedule. The manual indicates that you should check the cooling system every 4,800 km or each oil change. At every 24,000 km, you should inspect the cooling system hoses and clamps. At 160,000 km, it states you should replace the antifreeze coolant and completely inspect the cooling system.
Let's walk through a cooling system inspection. You can do this yourself or have a professional certified technician do this for you. It should start with a complete visual inspection. Check the belts, hoses and clamps and the antifreeze coolant level and the condition.
Next, a pressure test of this system should be conducted to verify that there are no leaks. If you do not have the tools or know-how to perform this test then, have a professional certified technician do this for you. The antifreeze coolant needs to be tested for proper dilution to ensure its freezing and boiling points are at the correct temperature range. Between -36 and -40 degrees Celsius for freeze protection and between 108 and 109 degrees Celsius for boil over.
Next, look to see if there's any contamination on the antifreeze coolant. Something you can do easily yourself is to make a habit of checking your cooling system once a month or during your oil change intervals and top off the cooling system, when the antifreeze coolant falls below the mean line on the reservoir tank. For your convenience, when toping up your antifreeze coolant, use a good quality reputable, branded premixed antifreeze coolant product.
Avoid freeze up and boil over by maintaining a proper 50/50 mixture of the antifreeze coolant and water. A 50/50 or premixed antifreeze for toping off your reservoir tank, also protects the vehicle's cooling system from corrosion, erosion and scale.
Remember don't wait a 160,000 km to inspect your cooling system. Regular maintenance and inspection is key to vehicle longevity. Use a brand name you trust like Prestone backed by 80 years of experience to protect your vehicle's cooling system. It's the most recognized brand in North America.
