Marc Bartolomeo: Ceiling beams can add a pressing style and an architectural touch to any room .Stick with me and I will show you the great way to construct some faux beams that will take your ceiling from average to incredible. Your faux beams can be installed directly into the ceiling joints, but if you have an open ceiling like I do here, you can install 2x4 blocking level with the bottom of the joists. This will give a nailer to secure the faux beams which are running parallel to the ceiling joists, got it?
All right, you are going to grab a 1x4 pine pranky and we are going to assemble them creating a U-shaped box, three size. I suggest using cedar shims, what the shims are going to do is to keep the face board off of the workspace just high enough, so that when you assemble the three sides of the box, you will create a shadow line and that will give the faux beam a little bit of depth in interest. Apply glue to the two side pieces and place them vertically against the bottom board creating a U-shape. Once you have them in place and clamped down, it's time to secure them using nail.
Now that your boxes are complete, you are going to want to take some wood filler and fill it all the nail holes and any things you might find on the faux beams. Once that dries, you'll use some sand paper and let it sand them and get it ready for staining or painting. Now, I'm finishing off these beams by staining them, before you prep any surface to be painted or stained, you want to wipe off the dust, the most important thing you can actually do. We will be using a conditioner and what the conditioner does, is allows oil based stains to be accepted uniformly by our wall wood and then about 10-50 min, go over with a dry rag pulling off all the excess. Now the stain needs to be applied within two hours of applying the prestain condition.
There are three ways to apply stain, foam applicator, paint brush or rag. We are going to be using the applicator to apply it initially and then we are to double back in about ten or fifteen minutes time and pull of any excess with the dry rag. Alright! This one looks great. So you want to repeat this process for all the beams that you have and you want to let them dried overnight. Now that all your beams are sufficiently dry and our ceiling is up, we can begin the installation process. The first thing you'll want to do is mark the layout of your faux beams on the ceiling using a chalk box snap straight lines, this will create the footprint of your new ceiling design.
Next, using 2x4s, you want to screw the wood flat up against the ceiling along the chalk lines creating a grid pattern. Alright, are you with me? These flat planks are going to serve as the nailer that your U-shaped beams are going to slide up around and be secured to. To install your faux beams, start with the longest beams firsts, sleeve them up over the flat planks and nail them through the sides up towards the dry wall of the ceiling and through the nailers. This will ensure that the beams are held up securely. Now you want to repeat this sleeving process for the smaller cross-sections which will finish off your faux beam design. That's you're about to do and these faux beams look great and in just one weekend, you are able to make sure that your ceiling will remain a notch above the rest.
