If you are wondering how I install glass in cabinet doors, then you are in luck because it is easier than you would think. I am Meghan Carter and this is AsktheDecorator.
Sometimes the things that we hide behind cabinet doors are too beautiful not to be on display. In those cases, it comes in handy knowing how to install glass in cabinet doors. To install glass in cabinet doors you first need to get glass pieces cut to the size you will need. Your cabinet should have at least an inch or more frame around the glass. Once you have the glass, take the cabinet door off the cabinet and remove all cabinet hardware. Then determine where to cut the door by using a measuring tape to draw the frame around the door. The hole you create should be the same size as your glass. Make sure to draw on the back of your door so you don’t mess up the front of your cabinet when you make your cuts. If you don’t want to write on your cabinet put painters tape on before drawing your box.
Then, it is time to cut the inside of your cabinet door. First, drill a wide hole in the four corners of your frame. Then insert your blade and cut out the square for the glass to fit in. Once the inside is cutout, attach a decorative molding frame to the front of the cabinet. If you plan on painting your cabinets prime the molding before you attach it to the door.
To make the molding frame, cut your pieces of wood at 45deg angles. To figure out what length to cut your molding, focus on where you want the outside edge of your molding. The length of the outer edges will be the length of your cut out hole plus the total overlap you need. To attach the molding, use a nail gun or a drill, finishing nails, and a nail set to attach the molding to the cabinet door. After attaching the molding spackle, cover and paint them.
Once the paint is dry, insert the glass into the door. After the glass has been inserted cut quarter rounds to fit inside the frame. The quarter rounds will hold the glass in place from the back. Cut the quarter round to the 45deg angle just like the decorative molding for the front of the cabinet. Then use a nail gun or a drill, finishing nails and a nail set to attach the quarter rounds to the back of the cabinet. Be very careful not to accidentally hit a nail through the glass. After attaching the quarter rounds, finish the back of the door the same as you did at the front of the door. Let the cabinet door dry then hang the cabinet doors up and you are done.
To add interest to your glass cabinet doors etch the glass before installing it. These cabinets turned out amazing. I mean they look so much better than they did before. It really is a drastic difference. And that Scotch behind the glass—too bad I am not a drinker.
