Welcome to PCWizKid’s Tech Talk, here it is how to install in Chrome 2.0? I am using the latest release of Chrome 2 its version is .72.28 just so you know and I am using the default theme right now. And we are going to switch that theme over to another that I downloaded after searching in trial and error. Different themes – I finally got one to work, if you are using XP and Vista. It’s very similar – the main thing is that you have to replace a fault called default.dll and if you are using XP it’s in the C:\ documents and settings the user name folder.
In there – there is a local settings application data Google, Chrome application version, number theme. So eventually once you have drilled down to that folder, you are going to get there and you are going to see the default.dll file that you can replace. If you are using Windows Vista, the path is a little bit different its C:\users-username updates a local Google, Chrome application, version number which is the latest version number that you have installed and then themes. Let’s go through a better example here, I am using Vista right now. So here is Explorer and here is the full path of my Vista PC its C:\ users-PCWizKid, because I am logged in as PCWizKid’s on to my PC.
- Updata and then local Google, Chrome application there is the version number. Right to the folder called 2.0172 so you can see that it already has a folder there. And another older folder because I have a previous version of Chrome, so doesn’t get confused if you have several versions. Always pick the latest version – the latest number and inside that folder there is a theme folder. Double click on that and in there you will see the default.dll. There it is – that is the default one that it came with, the only way to do it right now is to replace it.
So find the theme that is also called default.dll and just overwrite it. Make a backup of course- don’t just overwrite it without making a backup that is crazy. Back it up first then once you are done and secure that – you have it then you can replace it. And I just have another one called it’s a Safari theme that I found and I will just rename that one and make that the default.dll. And once you have renamed it or overwritten it, then just launch Chrome. Just double click on Chrome and look at the new skin, look at the new theme that has and there you go that is how it looks.
It got the Safari, guess look and feel for it, and the new version of course of Chrome 2.1 and onwards are going to add an official supported theme option. This is the unsupported way of doing things obviously, manually. But later on under the options, there will be a theme option to install themes properly. But right now that is the only way you can do it, you got to go behind the scenes, look for the theme that matches your version. And there is a web site called ChromePlug-ins.org that I went to and it has all kinds of themes. But it is for different version of Chrome, so let you trial and error back and forth until you get one that works.
Right because it keeps crashing Chrome because I was trying themes that work for older versions. But try it, try them out, so there you go finally you got the scoop on how to do it and I hope you enjoy this video and thank you for watching.
