Hey, guys Chris here again from ClassicVWBugs.com. In today's tip, I'm going to talk to you about sound deadening and sound insulation on your Classic Volkswagen. We are restoring a 58 bug here. It's a racked up bug, that just got back and I'm putting it back to together and working on the interior. And now before I put the carpet in I wanted to show you what I was doing this time around to deadening the sound in a Volkswagen and as if anyone knows, Volkswagen is a pretty loud and you got to remember that, you know in that back engine compartment there, it's right up against the backseat, and it vibrates the metal and it kind of makes a louder so that's why sometimes it's tough to even listen to the radio while you're driving in these cars.
But I'm going to show you a tip where you can go to Home Depot and basically pick up some sound insulation material on the cheap side, and it basically does exact same thing as some of the more expensive things out there like Dynamet. I picked up the stuff called - I don't know if you can see here is called a Quick Roof. And it's basically, it's got an aluminum backing and it's a peel and stick sort of thing. There is a also a product called Peel and Stick, that I saw allows --
And basically it's a roll, you roll it out, see what this guy is doing right here and you basically get a roller and you roll around -- I'm going to show you in a second what it looks like, but 15 bucks a roll and it's about 25 feet by six inches and you can cut it with a razor and put it on a floor and it's got a rubberized bottom and it sticks to the floor and that will stop the vibration and then what I'm going to show you in a couple of seconds is I'm going to behind the camera and get in the car and show you all the detail about how to apply this and what else to do the sound deaden your car, but this one is called Quick Roof or something very similar.
I like the Quick Roof, because it actually doesn't smell. When I check the Peel and Stick, that actually had an odor to it. You got to remember this is like roofing material, so if it's hard outside, and car sitting out in the sun, it might smell but I have a solution to stop that smell. So let me get behind a camera and then go through some details.
Okay, I'm behind the camera now, so here we go, I'm going to show you -- here's the 58 Bug that I am going to put back together. Now here's the back engine compartment area which is the luggage area behind the backseat and you got to remember right behind this area is the engine, and that's where you'll get a lot of noise back there, so here's the Quick Roof stuff that I just bought from Home Depot, like I said $15 a roll. The one roll did about this about this whole section.
And you can see, you just basically peel it off and you get one of these, get yourself one of these nice rollers and you roll it on to stick it down and it's really are nice and tight. You really can't pull up. It's really -- because it has got this foil backing to it and it's got a rubber adhesive underneath, and so it's really nice to put that on and that will really deaden the sound and then on top of that what you can do to give it a little more deadening and to also possibly stop to smell, I'm coming up.
I don't think it's got a smell. This brand, this seems pretty good, but if you get another brand besides the Quick Roof, what you might want to do is grab. See this stuff here. That's a roll of about -- see it's about a quarter inch of a carpet padding that you can get from -- when you get to the flooring area of Home Depot. I got this for 20 bucks, and what was it? It was 12 feet x 6 feet for $20.
You can go to JC Whitney and buy them already pre-cut. See, like this is already pre-cut for the floor pans if you see here. Okay? That's like $30-$40 just for that section, and then luggage area section. This over here on a roll will be much bigger and then you'll be able to cover most of your car with just that. So think about it.
You get a $15 roll from -- Quick Roof stuff, you probably will get like maybe 3-4 rolls to do the whole car. You put that down and then you put that sponge quarter inch carpet padding on top of this, and I'm telling you, you got to have a real quiet ride here.
Like I said there's other products out there like Dynamet, which is very popular, you see Chip Foose, use that a lot, his restorations. It basically does the same exact thing, but that is very pricey, you're talking of $100 to cover your car. So if you want to do this on a cheapest way to do it, it's called Quick Roof, you go to Home Depot and you can put it in also even your doors right here. I'm going to put it in here, you know before my door panels on, and not only even quiet ride, I was even thinking about putting it up here my firewall section where you put the carpet.
You know just to keep, just to deaden the sound and to make this ride a really nice smooth quiet ride. Okay, so I hope the tip helps you a little bit, I mean I noticed long wind that I was going on but so I want to let you know -- Bugs need some sound deadening and if you want to do it on the cheap side, go get this Quick Roof stuff or the -- like I said, Peel and Stick from either Lowe's or Home Depot, just go to the roofing section and you can pick this -- like I said, $15-$16. And it's real cheap and it's very valuable I think for something like this. I mean it's not for -- they will say, it's for automotive at the store, but you know what? I'm telling you this is going to be real nice and I'm going to put carpet padding on top of this and you just, you glue it down with an adhesive, you should have a real quiet bug, and without breaking your bank.
Alright! That's a tip, Chris@ClassicVWbugs.com, if you want to email me or you go to my website at www.ClassicVWbugs.com. Take care.
